Was wondering if anyone can help - was it a common occurence that people would change/swap their name in late 19th century? An ancestor of mine was John Clynes when he got married and on subsequent 1881 & 1891 census' then on 1901 census (the only i record i can find which i believe to be him) he seems to have swapped names with his son William! a
Ages/place of birth/occupation match up but his son William is down as John and John is now William?! Can't find any record of him or his wife Mary Clynes (nee Smith) on census' prior to 1881 either... Help!
