Phyllis May Hayes ?
« on: Thursday 25 April 13 12:52 BST (UK) »
A mystery lady. Married Frederick Walker in 1918 (Faringdon Register Office), according to marriage certificate he was a widower 70 years old and she was Spinster aged 25. This would lead me to suppose her birthdate is circa 1893 but i cannot find her on BMDs or Census. Her father is listed as Charles Hayes a Cowman on a farm and she was living with Frederick at the time of marriage in Gravel Walk, Faringdon. I know all about Frederick but nothing about her so if anyone has access to the local Parish records and can find a mention of her I would be very appreciative.

Any clues in a will for Frederick - if he left one?

Nice thought, can't see one on Ancestry though. If nothing else turns up i might try the probate court search engine.

Kenny,

I had a quick dig through census records and can't see anything that fits, I've also scanned the marriage records to see whether Phyllis married again, but didn't find anything that looked right.   I did however, find a burial record that looks promising:

Cholsey St Mary:

23 Nov 1953 - Phyllis May WALKER aged 58 - Fairmile Hospital

The age is a bit out, but I wonder whether this was given by Fairmile rather than a family member.

That is all of the detail that is shown on the record.

Regards
Harry

I assume you have searched under different spellings?  Heighes etc?  I wonder if her age is well out.  Difficult one.  Did they have children?

Thanks for that Harry, i had seen that but it looks as if she married again in 1937 to an Arthur Hunt, if so death was probably in Wantage 1939.
What also is quite astonishing is that she married Frederick in 1918, in 1924 she had a son but on the birth certificate there is no mention of the father. Frederick died in 1929 so he was very much alive when she gave birth.

A gem of a mystery

Does the second marriage certificate hold any further clues?
