Hi,
Can't see a GRO in Huddersfield but there is one listed on Ancestry In Ecclesfield (nr. Sheffield) GRO 22 113.
Joseph (47) was buried 22nd March 1840 at St Peter's, Huddersfield, abode given as Stile Common which is in Huddersfield.

That is strange. Huddersfield is a Registration District. An early one from 1837+. But Joseph could have died in a different Registration District and buried in another. Or have managed to get buried without a death certificate. But how can we argue with the St. Peter's, Huddersfield burial record. And there is no doubt that Huddersfield is in the Huddersfield Registration District. I checked FreeBMD for 10 years from July 1837-July 1847 and found no Joseph Pennington registered as dying in the Huddersfield Registration District.

Hi Silky
The volume number and page number are available free of charge on freebmd
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
You can view the GRO index pages on this site by clicking the spectacles alongside the entry you have found and then clicking 'view the original' on the left of the page to check the information is correct.

Hi
Deaths are registered where they occur which is not necessarily where a person lived or was buried. The Registration District of Ecclesfield looks to be very close to Huddersfield

Hi
Registration Districts often cover a far larger area than its town or village namesake, given that in 1843 part of the Registration District of Ecclesfield (the Parish of Cumberworth) was transferred to the Registration District of Huddersfield it would appear that the two Registration Districts border each other

Hi asilky
Thank you for your PM
It is quite possible that the Ecclesfield death is Joseph who was living in Huddersfield. As Andycand said deaths are registered where they occurred and it is quite possible that he was away from home for the day/week, maybe working.
I am afraid that the only way to find out if he did die away from home is to purchase the Ecclesfield certificate. It depends really what information you hope to find from it that you do not know from the burial you have already found.
