1301 Govan Road, Glasgow.
« on: Tuesday 23 April 13 13:12 BST (UK) »
One of my ancestors died at 1301 Govan Road, Glasgow in 1962.  I believe it was a hospital at the time.  Is it still there as looking on Google streetview, it looks as though there has been lots of clearance and new building going on.

Thank you ev.  Presumably it's been demolished now and a new hospital built somewhere.

I wonder why 1301 Govan Road was shown as the address where my ancestor (and others) died.  Reading up on it, it seems as though it was a workhouse originally, but in 1962 everyone must have known it was a hospital, so what's wrong with giving the address as Southern General Hospital?

It still is the Southern General Hospital ;D ;D ;D Just to confuse you totally the postal address now is currently 1345 Govan Road although it was still 1301 in 1966 when I was born there and the birth certificate still doesn't mention the hospital by name. No idea when the number changed (the buildings certainly didn't move!).

They are building a big new hospital in the grounds which I believe will have a different name but can't remember what off hand.

It just strikes me as odd that an address which happens to be a hospital would be shown on birth and death certificates, rather than the name of the hospital.  Is it a Scottish thing?  All the English birth/death certs I have for ancestors who were born or died in hospital, actually show that it was a hospital and the workhouse deaths show that it was a workhouse.

I was born in Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow in 1946 but my birth entry just gives a number and street name.

Must be a Scottish or Glaswegian thing, I think.

I was born at North Manchester Hospital, Blackley, Lancashire in 1941 and that's what it shows on the birth certificate.  My brothers born 1942 and 1953 were born at Southfield Maternity Home, Langham Road, Bowdon (as were 4 of my children) and all their birth certs show that.

Ah, not necessarily!

A number of 'modern' hospitals in the UK have their roots in Poorhouse hospitals from old. It was common through the 20th C (not so long ago!) to simply show an address rather than give a place name...avoiding the stigma I suppose of having been born/died at a certain place name.

You often see posts from people asking what a certain address was (because there are numerous google hits to the same address).
