Was it usual to only have the brides and grooms fathers name? I have William Thomas marrying Mary Jenkins on 15 August 1865 in Adelaide page 84 Vol no 63 and David Jenkins and Jenkin Thomas.I am trying to find out information on William Thomas probably born in Victoria. Thank you gmar

Short answer to your question is yes.

THOMAS William 25 years  Status not recorded  Father Jenkin THOMAS
JENKINS Mary 24 years  Status not recorded  Father David JENKINS
15 Aug 1865
At the Baptist Chapel, Adelaide  Ade Symbol S Book 63 Page 84.

This marriage appears twice in the indexes with the second registration Ade Symbol S Book 63 Page 59.

Symbol S. The certificate contains information which may not be published such as:
·   Groom or Brides father is deceased
·   The Mothers name is stated
·   The age is listed in years and months
·   A subsequent divorce is listed
·   Other unusual information is listed

Nothing on the Vic indexes.  Civil reg didn't commence until Jul 1853.

Oh I should have mentioned that transcriptions are available in South Australia and certificates in 1865 only detail the following and most of the information is on the index anyway.
    Date and Place of Marriage
Bride and Bridegrooms Names, Ages and Rank
    Trade
    Residence
    Father's names
    Church

Transcriptions in SA - I recommend the first one named.

I wrote the above linked post some time ago and this is a more recent URL for the second site.   SA Genealogy no charge $22 for transcriptions if you are not a member.
