Captain Francis HOLE
« on: Wednesday 17 April 13 12:19 BST (UK) »
Good day to all,

I am searching for information on the Army or Navy career of one Captain Francis Hole, born 1798 Devon, former JP, Alderman and in 1844 Mayer of Tiverton, Devon. I have him in the 1841/51/61 census returns, but it is his Military service possible between 1818-1828 I am interested in, his Grandson Captain Francis Hole Bourne 1850-1880 was in the 43rd Light Infantry, Scotland.

Any help with this gratefully received, ;)

Regards,

Peter.

I haven't a clue how that happened as I hadn't even seen this post prior to the Hilditch one - have deleted my replies to avoid confusion

With apologies

The National Archives has a will dated 1822 for a man of this name, a captain in the Royal Marines. Note a date on a will is when it was drawn up and probably many years before a death. PROB 11/1662/402  reference
Avery [Wembury]
Skilton [Hooe, Turnchapel, Plymstock and Coxside Plymouth]
Williams [Plymstock/Oreston]
Maritime subjects inc Titanic, HMS Hardy, HMS Thetis [submarine]

There is a record of a Francis Hole marrying Jane Boger on May 20 1822 at Little Torrington - see http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~cmtilbury/history/northtawton_pages/northtawton_people.html. This source claims that Francis Hole went on to become Deputy Lieutenant of Devon. If this is the same man - it sounds at least plausible given the dates and record of public service - then he died at Standerwick Court near Frome in October 1873. His son John Boger Hole JP (born c. 1823) was a senior clerk at the Foreign Office (Russian and Turkish Department) 1865-1872 and was a Director of the Eat and West India Docks Co. (John also lived at Florence Villa, Inner Park Road, Wimbledon Park, which is in my Council Ward hence my interest.) If you have any more information on your Francis Hole I would be interested.
