1851 /1861 / 1871 Derbyshire lookup please, Hopkinson
« on: Friday 09 July 04 17:47 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the following family in the 1851 / 1861 / 1871 census(es), trying to confirm a lead I have in the 1881:

Henry Hopkinson, farmer/labourer.
Ann Hopkinson, his wife. They married in 1848
James Hopkinson, his son, born 1849

The family lived in the area of Derbyshire variously described as Clay Cross, Stretton and Wooley Edge.

Thanks for any help. This is the first lead I have had on this branch in ages and I am quite excited.

David.

sorry cant help with the look ups but thought i would mention that there is an extensive hopkinson family tree (mainly around the ashover area) that may be worth a look if you havent already seen it.  it is part of john mills family tree who is a distant relative of mine as his gt grandmother sarah ann wileman(my relative) married Arthur Hopkinson in Ashover in 1875.
the family tree can be accessed via the ashover.com site, then go into links and then click on Into the Valley of my Ancestors and it will take you there.

David,

I am transcribing the 1891 for the area you have mentioned and under Enumeration district 16 and 17 of RG12/2758 are a number of HOPKINSON families.  Also if you can give me some more details I will see what I can find from the 1861 but I would need more than just Clay Cross wooley edge and stretton as its not indexed and they are very large areas to cover.

Also you should note that Clay Cross in 1861 and 1851 census was known as Clay Lane

Thanks, MadbadRob,

I know my details are sketchy, and that every second family in that area has the surname Hopkinson! That is just one of my woes!

Sadly at the moment all I have to go on is what is posted on this board.

I have extensive records of Hopkinson families in Ashover,
Clay Cross & North Wingfield going back to 1500s,and your Henry is probably in my tree.I found one Henry b.1828
at North Wingfield, parents Thomas & Jane that could be yours. If you want his ancestors I have them back to late 1500s.
