Finn-Furlong Connection,Campile,County Wexford
« on: Saturday 13 April 13 21:45 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for a connection between a Furlong from Great Island, Campile, County Wexford and the Finns of Campile. This would date from about 1850. Does anyone know of any relevant records that I can access?

What denomination were your Furlong and Finn families ?

The townland of Greatisland is about 6km (4 miles) west of Camplie village which is located on the borders of Ballykeeroge, Dunbrody and Ballyvellig townlands. The townlands are in the civil parishes of Kilmokea and St. James & Dunbrody (a civil parish boundary runs through the village).

The are some details of the area included in the entry for the Civil parish in Lewis' Topagraphic directory of 1837  : Kilmokea civil parish

The RC parish was Sutton's, which also contained Whitechurch and Ballybrazill civil parishes, and some parts of Old Ross and St. James's civil parishes

RC baptism and marriage records for Sutton's parish go back to 1824, and are available in the National Library on Microfilm Pos. 4261. The parish is sometimes listed as 'Ballykelly' which is the name of the townland where the parish church was located by about the 1860, although earlier the RC parish church was located in the townland of Horeswood, just north of Campile.

Transcripts of a few Co. Wexford parish registers are available on a pay-website (RootsIreland), but just 5 parishes, and none for Sutton's or the other adjacent parishes yet.

You can view Griffith's valuation for the townland of Greatisland on the AskboutIreland website, see : Greatisland, Co. Wexford (click on occupants to show the list of names)  This section of the return is dated 1853. There are several Furlongs listed - Thomas, Matthew, John, all leasing property from a Nicholas Power.

There's just one mention of the surname Finn in Kilmokee civil parish, and that's a John Finn with quite a large property of about 35 acres in the townland of Ballykeeroge Beg, which is just north east of Campile, and adjacent to Ballykeeroge townland which contains the northern part of the village. There about 15 Finn listing in the other civil parish, St. James & Dunbrody) covering Campile... I see if I can workout how close to the village they are located. (The civil parish covers reasonably large area extending to the towns of Ballyhack, Arthurstown/Kingsbay, Ramsgrange & Duncannon)

working out where the various Finn entries are located for St. James and Dunbrody on Griffth's :

1. Richard Finn, Ballygow townland - close to Fethard on Sea, abt 10km/6 miles from Campile
2. John Finn, also Ballygow townland
3 & 4. seems to be additional properties in Ballygow for Richard & John
5 & 6. Thomas Finn, Ballyhack townland - abt 6km/4 miles
7. Bridget Finn also Ballyhack
8. Thomas Finn, also Ballyhack (could be a 2nd property for 5/6)
9. Anne Finn, Ballyvelig townland, which contains part of Campile village
10. Patrick Finn also Ballyvelig townland
11. John Finn, Grange townland - abt 3km/2 miles
12. William Finn, Kilhile townland - close to Ballyhack
13. Patrick Finn, Ramsgrange - abt 6km/4 miles

I suggest the Patrick and Ann in Ballyvelig townlands as the most likely connections along with the John Finn in Ballykeeroge Beg

The other two entries both relate to Grange townland, and properties where a John Finn is the immediate lessor, rather than occupier.

The Tithe Records (1823-1837) on the National Archives website also show 3 Finns at Greatisland townland (listed as Great Island), and a number of Finns in both Kilmokea and St James & Dunbrody parishes - some in the same townlands as on Griffiths.
