Trying to find Harry Clarke Braithwaite in 1901 census
« on: Saturday 13 April 13 19:40 BST (UK) »
Harry Clarke Braithwaite (HCB) was born in the June quarter of 1879 at Sandhutton near Thirsk. He appears in the 1881 census with his parents John 28 labourer born Thornton Steward, Mary Hannah 33 born Sandhutton and HCB aged 2. The 1891 census for Sandhutton shows him with his grandmother Sarah Thompson a widow aged 70 born Middleham and HCB is 12 a scholar. In the 1911 census HCB is at West Rounton Gates, Northallerton aged 32 a railway plate layer. His mother Mary Hannah Waterworth aged 62 married for 22 years (2 marriages) is a visitor. Harry is described as a widower but this is wrong as his wife whom he married in 1906 left him, had child (see below)  by another man and the 3 of them emigrated to New Zealand. Perhaps as far as he was concerned she was dead.

The birth certificate of the above child Harry Horner Braithwaite born in 1908 says his father is Harry Braithwaite a coachman. However, I and the present Horner descendants in NZ think that the father was William Henry Horner aka Harry Horner who was a coachman. It would appear that when they emigrated they simply started calling the child Harry Horner dropping the Braithwaite part of his name.

XX Horner who is working in the UK wants to obtain a 'grandparent visa' and needs to prove that a grandparent was born in the UK.  I am trying to find HCB in the 1901 census to see what his occupation was then, in case it might have been 'coachman'. When he married in 1906 he was a confectioner.  I have looked at Sandhutton but he is not there. I have tried various wild cards but no luck. Can anyone find him?  I also cannot find his father after 1881or his mother in the 1891 or 1901 censuses.

I can;t see him immediately - however you’ll need to bear in mind that a number of young men are missing from the 1901 census as they are out fighting in the Boer War.

Hi again, in 1891 here is Mary H:-

William Waterworth 35 occ Commercial Traveller b Bubwith, Yorks
Mary Hannah 37 b Sandhutton
William Joseph 6 months b Headingley, Leeds
Residing at 28, Royal Park Grove, Headingley
Census Ref RG12/3709/10/13

Death William Joseph Waterworth June qtr 1891 Leeds 9b 541 aged 0

I presume your William Henry Horner occ Coachman Domestic was the one in 1901 Wakefield b c 1870 Nafferton, Yorks with wife Maria b c 1872 Scotswood, Northumberland with daughter Elizabeth F b c 1895 Melmerley, Kent who looks to have died as Elizabeth Florence Horner June qtr 1907 Wakefield 9c 36 aged 13, so did Maria die, or did William H leave her for Harry H's mother?
Census Ref for 1901 RG13/4284/32/20
Maria could possibly be the death in March qtr 1907 Hexham 10b 251 aged 36?
