John Storey born Carperby circa 1800
« on: Saturday 13 April 13 12:41 BST (UK) »
I would be grateful for some help with my 3rd great grandfather, John Storey, who I believe was born in Carperby between about 1801 and 1808.

What I know so far is that in 1841 he was living in Grassington, age said to be 33, working as a lead miner, and was married to Ann (maiden name unknown) aged 40, with Margaret, 14, a weaver, Edward, 10, and John Armstrong, age 60, mole catcher.  I am guessing John might have been his father-in-law.

In 1851 he was still in Grassington, age said to be 50, still a lead miner. His surname had been written as Storra.  He was with his wife Ann, children Margaret, 23 and Edward 20, and his son-in-law Absalom Sheldon. John was said to be born in Carperby and Ann and the children in Grassington.

In 1861 Ann was a widow, living with Edward and his wife in Linton, so John must have died between 1851 and 1861.

The family church for many in my line was St. Michael and All Angels Church, Linton, Skipton, but I don't know if this family worshipped there.

I'm hoping someone might be able to help with a baptism and/or marriage record for John.

The only baptism at Aysgarth which would fit would be :

June 15th 1800 John son of William and Isabella Storey of Carperby.

That is the only bap shown for that family and there is no record of a marriage for William Storey to an Isabella in the local area.
I wonder if the family were not in the Wensleydale area for very long ?

I can not see a marriage for your John Storey to Ann in that area, so was it at Grassington ?

There was a John Storey buried at Skipton June qtr 1852 and Ann Storey buried at Skipton Sept qtr  1868 aged 77 which would fit your family.

Thank-you, that is certainly a lead worth following up.  If Ann was born in Grassington it is likely that is where they married, isn't it?  The parish church for Grassington would have been St. Michael & All Angels at Linton in Craven. I may need to post again on the West Yorkshire board, as they are just over the border!

A possible for you to check from www.familysearch.org parish register extract for Linton in Craven

John Storey and Ann Armestrong 20 Dec 1824, date fits well and the Armstrong connection to the name on the 1841 census might be a lead

I have just re-read your posting and in particular the list of family interests at the foot of the posting.

Might I ask, which Mudd's, Heseltine's and Thwaite's  from Wensleydale?
