Blakiston Baronets of London
« on: Thursday 11 April 13 18:23 BST (UK) »
Hi all, trying to find more detailed personal information on the Blakiston Baronets of London. Would be grateful for estate information, accounts, news paper articles, military records and anything else that may be of interest. I would also like to establish the link between the Baronets of London and the Baronets of Gibside.

Details:

Blakiston Baronets of London:
Sir Matthew Blakiston, 1st Baronet (c. 1702–1774)
Sir Matthew Blakiston, 2nd Baronet (1761–1806)
Sir Matthew Blakiston, 3rd Baronet (1783–1862)
Sir Matthew Blakiston, 4th Baronet (1811–1883)
Sir Horace Nevile Blakiston, 5th Baronet (1861–1936)
Sir Charles Edward Blakiston, 6th Baronet (1862–1941)
Sir Arthur Frederick Blakiston, 7th Baronet (1892–1974)
Sir (Arthur) Norman Hunter Blakiston, 8th Baronet (1899–1977)
Sir Ferguson Arthur James Blakiston, 9th Baronet (born 1963)
The heir presumptive is the present holder's younger brother (Norman) John Balfour Blakiston (born 1964)

Sir Matthew Blakiston 1st Baronet, Lord Mayor of London was the son of George Blakiston (1675-1717) and Elizabeth Kay and grandson to George Blakiston (b.1663) and Mary Bourchier, daughter of Sir John Bourchier. Matthew Blakiston was 3rd cousin of Sir Thomas Blakiston of Blakiston and 4th cousin of Sir Ralph Blakiston of Gibside. - I'd like to focus on this link.

Blakiston Baronets of Gibside:
Sir Ralph Blakiston, 1st Baronet (c. 1589–1650) - father
Sir William Blakiston, 2nd Baronet (died 1692) - first son
Sir Francis Blakiston, 3rd Baronet (died 8 October 1716) - second son

Blakiston Baronets, of the manor of Blakiston:
Sir Thomas Blakiston, 1st Baronet (1582–1630)

I'd also like to find any portraits/pictures on them? I'm more interested in the Blakiston Baronets of London as my great great grandmother is decsended from them. Maud Blakiston (1860-1960) stated that her great grandmother's portait was hung in the Royal Academy when she reached 100.

Kind Regards,

Sykes.

Sykes,

Did you ever get anywhere with this? I have an interest in Harriet Elanor, wife of the 6th Baronet, who was himself a major during WWI and later a Unionist MP for Belfast dock between 1929 and 1933. They lived in Belfast during WWI and Harriet was a devout Catholic, and devoted parishioner of St Malachy's, where my ancestors worshipped at the time. She apparently raised money for a war memorial to be erected in the church, which is thought to be the only one in a Catholic Church in Ulster, but even more remarkable it was erected in August 1917, which must be unique.

They appear to have moved back to the mainland at some time in the 30s, and are buried in a small village in Beds.

A very intriguing couple, have you got any more detail on them?

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

I think you might be getting confused as the man in Ireland seems to be Major Charles Blakiston-Houston not the 6th Baronet Charles Edward Blakiston.

There is more information about Major Charles Blakiston-Houston and his wife on this link
http://www.thepeerage.com/p17116.htm#i171159

The 6th Baronet's wife Harriet Eleanor Willes was a sister to my 2 x Great Grandfather, she was born 1861 and died 1953 - if anyone has a photo of her or her husband I would be very interested to see it.
