I've just checked the Derby Trades Directory for 1857, there are two glass manufacturers in the town, one is a William Jukes, 2 Bridge Gate, spooky!

Hi, I've no real idea, but considering the road or canal transport and the building of lots of mills with windows, did they not bring in raw materials and make the glass on site? The raw materials would not break in transit as would glass panes. Therefore maybe not an established glass maker, but a transient one.

Skewy,  making glass was a complicated business,, a big brick cone is needed for starters. Sheet glass was packed in wooden cases for shipment. Canals probably gave a smoother run than road or rail.
However, the guys have established that this Brookwalls, as per the census, is a mistranscription or an error on the part of the ennumerator. The actual address is Brook Walk in Derby itself, it had to be somewhere with a glassworks.
Many thanks.

Hi Skoosh,

The John Forbes you have in Nottingham 1841 Census.

1.  He states not born in County which suggests he was born in England, also his occupation
     is shoe maker.

2.  1851 he is still in Nottingham, married to Charlotte.  Occupation Cord Wainer and born
Hougham, Lincolnshire.  His mother Janet is still alive and living with the family.

Think you can safely dismiss this one.

Thanks Spendlove, I think possibly he might be in the Stourbridge area, maybe William Jukes was there also. A Thomas Jukes took over a glassworks in Dudley around 1900 so that could be their origin. Glasmaking was tight knit industry, the men were well paid and tended to travel.

Bests,

Skoosh.

Freebody's Directory 1852 also has James Butler Glass Manufacturer 57 Bridge St.

I believe Brook Walk Derby is the path running from Bridge St to Ford St immediately north of Markeaton Brook. I half recall a building immediately north of Brook Walk and east of Bridge St as havinga glass connection, but memory is getting hazy.

Unfortunately it looks as if the University is continuing to take over the ares for accommodation, and Google Street view now only shows a building site.
