Jane JAMISON c1818

Hello

I am researching the Collis family of Tasmania.  In particular I am trying to find a birth date, birth place and parents names of Jane Jamison born c1818.  The Tasmania Colonial Family database has her as being the wife of (and mother to the children of) James Collis.     Jane was also known by the name of Essie.  I haven't be able to find their marriage, or a confirmed death.  Does anyone have any information they are willing to share?

Hi Giblet

Thank you so much for pointing me in the direction of Esseye Collis's will.  It has proved a suspicion I have had regarding the identity of James wife who he married in 1879.  I have always wondered if Essey Smith was actually Jane Jamison. Jane was recorded as Essey Jamison for some of their children's baptisms.  Her will names their children as her sons, so I think I can clear that mystery.  Now as to where she came from??

Essie Smith proved that she was present when Mr. Collis said he would have to take away the stock, and heard plaintiff say " give me what you can."

Thanks for the news clipping.  As a by the by, one of the witnesses in the second case, Robert McDougall was married to James Collis's mother Elizabeth (nee Williams).

From 1897 the "place of birth" question was added to death certificates in Tasmania, so it would be worth getting the cert to see what the informant said.

Hi all   - Well this is interesting... I have been hunting the Jane Janieson ( JEMMISION  Essie Jessie etc etc) thing, for far to long to remember.  Only this last month I came to the same conclusion - and even updated my on line tree to reflect this that Essie is Jessie.  I think the  the will makes that more likely..

However I do have a copy of the page entry for their marriage Nov 13 1879 BTW They are my great grandparents.  Essie made her mark - James signed.  and the theory of a death enabling their marriage would work too as James Collis is stated to be a widower and Essie a Widow - then of course the question is who were the early partners?? 

The marriage was witnessed by James Collis Junior (who would be their eldest James William)  and his wife Georgina (nee Paine)

The enigma continues  :-) - Any thoughts?
