Dickson/Kirkinrolia, Craigywarren, Ballymena area
« on: Monday 08 April 13 10:35 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on my ggrandfather George Dicksons siblings and mother.
George was born around 1866 and his fathers name was James Dickson.
He married Elizabeth McKay(known as Lizzie) in Sept 1889.
They had a family of 9 children, of which I have details.
He died in 1920 in the workhouse in Ballymena.

If born after 1864, he should be listed in the Civil Birth Indexes, that said, closest I can see for Ballymena area is a George Dickson born 1868, apparently to a John Dickson and a Mary Maitland. Where did you get the father's name as 'James' for your George - was it from the marriage record?

Is this your George in Larne area:

Yes that's my George in the Larne census..
I saw that birth cert with the fathers name of John, but the wedding cert says its James.
Is it possible that the fathers name and Georges age could be wrong?

Anything is possible, but by working through all the facts you have and cross referencing each, hopefully you will rule each piece of info in/out and have a clearer overall picture.

What address appears for George on the marriage certificate? Do any family members appear to be witnesses?

The address on the marriage cert is, Ballycregagh, Dunaghy, Antrim.
The witnesses on the cert don't seem to be family, as far as I can tell.

Certainly the Griffiths Valuation places a James Dixon (often seen as alternative spelling for Dickson) in Ballycregagh townland:

albeit no sign of them there at the slightly earlier time of 1851 in these census fragments:

Further, a list of plot owners for Clough Graveyard for the period 1875-1937 includes a James Dixon of Ballycreagah (slight spelling variation) for 4 graves.

I found a James Dickson on the Clough Interments 1875-1914.
He died 1893 from Ballycraigagh, Dunaghy.
This made me think I was on the right line. but mabe not!!

With the marriage cert, griffiths and plot details all placing a James at Ballycregagh, I would agree that this seems the likely name of George's father. It would therefore seem probable that George was born perhaps a few years earlier than the age suggested on census (and this is not at all unusual) and so a search of church records for Dunaghy area might be more productive in finding his birth.

Thanks so much for all the help on this. Think a trip to the records office is my only option with this.
