MARRIAGE HELP
« on: Wednesday 08 June 05 01:30 BST (UK) »
Anyone please!  Dead end!  Where can I try that I haven't already?  I'm looking for a marriage between a David Davies and Rachel Price.  David and Rachel on 1871 census as Davies in Blaenavon aged 32 and 23 and in 1861 Rachel 13 with father William in Llanhilleth and David 22 with parents Elizabeth and Thomas in Llanelly.

Dianne,

I presume you have searched FreeBMD and found nothing, as I just did.  It looks as if they have transcribed all records between 1866 and 1871 which is the most likely date range for the marriage, although they could have been living together without benefit of marriage in 1871.

The only thing I can suggest is to try parish registers from 1866 on, (in case Rachel was married at a very young age, unlikely), for the parishes of both parties.  You will need Powys Record Office, (http://archives.powys.gov.uk/), for Brecon, and Gwent Record Office, (http://www.llgc.org.uk/cac/cac0004.htm), for Monmouth.

It is also possible that the marriage, if it happened, is recorded in the local registar's records but was missed from the GRO index.  The record offices will be able to advise if it is possible to search their records or if you have to provide the date of the marriage in order to get a certificate.  Most annoying when this is required!!!

Unfortunately there is no local indexing project underway on http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/index.php for the counties you are interested in.

Good luck with your search.

Viv,

Thank you so much for your helpful info.  I had thought at one stage parish records but being of that time frame maybe not but I can see by your explanation that it is possible.

I did find on Free BMD a Daniel Davies & Rachel Price married but in 1880.  Could it be possible that Daniel could have been put down instead of David?  As David keeps showing up on the various census and his daughters certificates that I have, I feel it is definately David.  I also found a Daniel Davies on BMD born Llanelly in 1838 the same as my David.  Could this be just a coinsidence as well?

Hello Dianne
There is an odd entry on Free Bmd with one of the females missing.

Surname  First name(s)    District  Vol  Page

~~~~~~~~
Marriages Dec 1870
~~~~~~~~

DAVIES  David    Abergavenny  11a 95
Griffiths  Mary     Abergavenny  11a 95
Pritchard  David     Abergavenny  11a 95

Abergavenny is the correct registration  district for Blaenavon.
Perhaps a search for Rachel in the same quarter on the following site might
bear fruit.

http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/

Blaenavon parish marriages are  listed on Mike Johns website.
If the couple were non conformist they will not be listed.

Re Daniel Davies .
Llanelly district for  Bmd registration purposes  refers to a district in West Wales.
Llanelly parish  Breconshire came under Crickhowell district.
