The marriage would only mean that George was resident at Butterwick Lincs at the time of marriage -not (necessarily) that he was born there.

Edward entered the Navy on 1 Aug 1822, passing the examination for Lieut. on 26 Jan 1829 and receiving his Commisson on 23 Nov 1841.

He entered the Coastguard service from Southampton on 6 Dec 1839, with an appointment as Chief Officer at Cornhill CG Station, from where he made the following moves:

20 Feb 1841 to Selsey Bill
28 May 1842 to Elmer
16 June 1846 to Littlehampton
12 September 1846 resigned due to ill health.

Many thanks Martin - I wouldn't have known where to start to find that information about Edward and his CG career.  It really adds to the life of a relation.

I'm afraid I can't help with ma witnesses nor move you any further back so the suggestion to look at the Ma Licence record is your best hope.

In case it is of use here is 1861 census:

Cottage, Shrewton, Amesbury Wilts
Gertrude Dowers H unm Governess b 1812 London
George Barnard wid Royal Navy rtd b 1778 Eton
Anna M Barnard unm  Teacher  b1807 Oakham
Emma Tillott Serv  b 1840 Nursling Hants

It seems therefore that his wife died bet 1851 and 61, nor can I find George after 1861.
I've looked for burials of the other children but can't find any.
Sorry I can't give any more info but hope this helps.
Happy hunting.

DEXTER-  pre 1800 Rutland & Lincolnshire
DAWSON -  Wymeswold Leics
HALL - Sheffield Yorkshire UK & Tasmania
MARSH- Willoughby on the Wolds
BLEWITT/BLUEITT/BLUITT mainly Grantham area

Many thanks Forte - I hadn't found them on the 1861 census so that is very helpful.

Just thought if Edwdard was in the Navy and it was his career, he could have been
buried at sea.  Just wondered what happened to death certificates or notices if
that did occur??
