Hi

I also have several variations of Tierney.

Tierney, Tiernay, Tiernan, Tearnan, Turney and even Turner in the 1881 Census.

My Great Grandfather came to Sunderland about 1868, can find him in 1871 but not 1861.

Even on the parish records of St Patricks Church in Sunderland, there are variations of the name on the same time.

I wish you luck finding them

Cheryl (Tierney originally from Wallsend)

John Ternan married Catherine Flynn in Newcastle 1849. I think St Andrews RC might be favourite. Apart from St Patrick's, Felling, Gateshead did not have a catholic church with a licence to perform marriages then, assuming they were catholic of course.

(Mc)Ternan (Mac Tighearnáin) and (O)Tierney (Ó Tighearnaigh) were easily confused because they are both derived from the Irish word Tighearna meaning lord.

Good luck,
J.T.A.
