Dear All,
Thank you for your prompt advice and help. To fill in a few of the blanks. The blue marines,,according to Wiki, were the artillery element of the Royal Marines. John Kenny was born in Castlecomer in Co Kilkenny Ireland between 1840 and 1842. He was orphaned as a young child and apparently then joined the military. One of my other relations said it could have been as young as 8 years old and this was because he was an orphan. He met Elizabeth Quine although her surname could be Gunne and they were married in Malew in 1871. They had a son John Thomas Kenny who was born in November 1874. In 1875 they left the Isle of Man and went to Sydney Australia. John's sister Mary my great great grandmother had in 1862 sponsored him to Australia as an assisted immigrant. On his shipping record he is listed as a labourer. He died in 1890. I looked at the Isle of Man census on Ancestry and couldn't find him. I'll look where you suggest. There was another John Kenny who fought in the Maori Wars. he was originally from Ireland but came to Melbourne and then joined up.
Regards
Jane
