Martha Sweeting
« on: Friday 05 April 13 14:45 BST (UK) »
Hi lovely people.
I wondered if anyone could help me.
I am looking for possible birth records for a Martha Sweeting, born, Durham abt 1864-1872.
I have a marriage certificate for her, that states her father was called John Sweeting and in 1887 she was 18 (allegedly) when she married John Devlin in Middlesborough.
I cannot seem to source the correct census information/birth record for her early years.
The nearest I can find is a birth in 1870 and a census record for a Martha Sweeting living with a William and Martha Sweeting as her parents. This Martha has an older brother called John?
I know she died March Quarter of 1933, aged 62.
Any help in locating the correct records for her early years would be much appreciated?
I am struggling.
Many thanks
Sophie

Does the marriage cert list her father's occupation?  There may just have a mix up with christian names when she married.

Oh this is definately Martha's mother Suzard as the address on the marriage certificate says Garbutt Street!!!
Brilliant - where did you find this though as I cant find it on Ancestry.
I have only been told info from the certificate as I dont have it myself but was told her father was John, who was a cooper. I am checking with my source on that (hoping for an email back).

Yes, yes yes!! I am so excited.
Tazzie, this is them. You are both wonderful! I have been at this for days.

You are all so wonderful - how do you do it? I couldn't find these on Ancestry at all - despite trying to search name variations......

Sorry to be a pain...
Do you think the record for 'Stabley' is a spelling error. I am struggling to find records for John Sweeting (Stabley), born around 1823, Market Weighton, Yorkshire, marriage or birth and still struggling to find a birth for Martha Sweeting around 1869.
Although the census info for 1881 and 1891 is definately my girl...
16 boarders by the way - is that normal??????

The Mary Ann in the census in 1881 and 1891 is listed as born about 1878 which could possibly tie in with a birth in Houghton le Spring Reg District in  Dec qtr 1877  Vol 10a   Page 486  From FreeBMD
Sorry - I am an idiot looking at Mary Ann instead of Martha.
Kay

Martha appears to have been running a boarding house rather than just taking in boarders
