GRO says no - QUINN
« on: Friday 05 April 13 10:43 BST (UK) »
Hello from Australia  8)  I have found the birth entry on the internet on 2 different sites & I know it was an army registered birth.  I wrote to the GRO office in England but they said they didn't have the record??

Name: QUINN, Margaret
Regiment:  44th Foot
Place:  Manchester
Country:  England
Year:  1858
Vol  1199
Page:  17

From GRO Regimental Birth Indices (1761 to 1924)

I am hoping to find out Margaret's mother's name and the age of Patrick her father.

Can someone point me in the right direction please

thankyou!

Hello from NSW Australia  ;D (with a Lancs Lass as one of my forebears)

At the following link there’s the option to order a copy of the birth registration for a Margaret QUINN, mother’s maiden name of FLEMING, birth registered in 1858 at North Meols sub district of North Sefton.   Ref no. NM/12/383

Cheers,  JM

Yemram - noy sure why the GRO can't provide the certificate - I've had military births in the 1850s from them, albeit outside the UK. In any case the certificate won't tell you one of things you want - her father's age. Have you seen his military records? I suspect you're using FindMyPast  - if so there are records on there for a Patrick Quinn who was with the 44th so a strong possible for your man.

Now seen majm's post - if the birth was registered as military & Manchester it is very unlikely to be the same one - different system (civil v military) & different registration district (Manchester tends to come out as Manchester or Chorlton).

Yes, Autumn arrived last Monday  :) the nip is in the air so early in the afternoon now.  Daylight savings ends this weekend, to so the nip will occur at the same time as the shadows lengthen and disappear.

I don't know if that's your Margaret QUINN, but I hope it will be a good place to start ..... North Sefton could be a decent step and a half from Manchester even for a 44th foot regimental chap ...

Cheers,  JM  (I am at Nords Wharf, overlooking Lake Macquarie ... south of Newcastle, ie south of Swansea  :)  :) )

Hi

The birth that majm has pointed out to you will be the following birth on the GRO Index

Margaret Quinn Dec Qtr 1858 Ormskirk Registration District Vol 8b Page 507

I have always thought that the Army births index relates to overseas births and that births in England would be recorded within the normal GRO Index

Andy

There is a tree on Ancestry that has the mother's name as Ellen , no surname or further details though.
