could anyone tell me what a coal hewer did in 1911. my great grandfather was a miner in 1911 also is there a place where i can find out which pit he worked in

Calibra - Staffs had numerous pits - often close together so unless you have any direct evidence you may have several pits that were possible workplaces. There are two websites that have material about North Staffs pits, accidents etc that may be of interest:
