Finlayson family
« on: Wednesday 03 April 13 22:50 BST (UK) »
Hello....  I'm looking for for the family of Douglas Hugh Finlayson b. 1912 in Edinburgh and came to Canada in 1928.  I know he attended a boarding school in Edinburgh in his early teens. I also know he had an Aunt named Agnes Finlayson that lived at 24 Thirlestane Rd.   If anyone has any other details such as who his parents were, it would be a huge help.  Thank you.

Hi

His birth will be on Scotlands People and if he was born in 1912 - you are in luck as that's the last year you can download a copy for at the moment.

You will need to buy some credits as SP is a pay per view site

Could it be possible that Bertha Adelaide Margaret Vorley's (b. 1877) parents are Margaret and Herbert Henry Vorley? Herbert Henry Vorley was prominent photographer.

Not listed in the NZ BDMs online.

1874/44278   Vorley   NR   Margaret   Herbert Henry   -
1873/16443   Vorley   Frances Sharp   Margaret   Herbert Henry   -
1870/24598   Vorley   Beatrice Mary Maud   Margaret   Herbert Henry

the Adelaide may be a clue.

Interesting entry in the 1901 (England) census where there is a Bertha M Vorley aged 24 b New Zealand "living on own means" MARRIED.   Also a boarder was a Caroline Vorley  aged 19 Lady Clerk.

Advice please...  just going over some things and came across this again...
Interesting entry in the 1901 (England) census where there is a Bertha M Vorley aged 24 b New Zealand "living on own means" MARRIED.    She didn't marry till 1903 to Herbert Finlayson in south Africa.  What does "living on own means" mean? could they have listed her as married by mistake? or did she have another husband?  and how did she end up in South Africa?  sorry for all the question but I've been told by family that this lady had a colourful history so I'm curious about her.

"Living on own means" indicates that she had a private income or resources of some kind that meant she did not need to earn a living.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
