Please can anyone advise me on the location of the parish and town of Lochloran in shire of Inverness?

This is the stated residence of the brides late father Alexander MacPhearson. He is described as a farmer.

The bride was Mary MacPhearson and the groom George England Ostler to John Burt Vintner of Perth.

The handwriting is very clear. The marriage took place on the 4th Dec 1787 and was conducted by Mr Duncan MacFarlane missionary minister of Glenshee.

Thanks in advance

Lochloran is not a place (or parish) name I am familiar with, in my travels around Inverness-shire.

Now if the minister was from GlenSHIEL (and not Glenshee) I would have suggested it was ROSS-shire, and thus the parish of LOCHALSH or possibly LOCHCARRON. Glenshiel and (Kyle of) Lochalsh and Lochcarron are located on the west coast, bordering Inverness-shire (Glenelg on mainland, and Isle of Skye).

Parishes of Inverness-shire are listed at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/INV/parishes.html

Just a thought.

Thanks Dave for replying.

The minister was definitely from Glenshee.

I think I have attached an excerpt of the marriage entry showing the name 'Lochloran'

Certainly very clear handwriting. I cannot interpret it as anything other than "lochloran" - but where that is (was) I have no idea. "Town and Parish"?

The only Loch Loran I can find is a loch near Lochgilphead in Mid Argyll. Although there were some instances of some parishes/segments of one county were orphaned within another county back then, I do not know if there were little pockets of Inverness-shire that far south.

Can I suggest as a wild guess that this is a mishearing of the parish of Loch Laggan?

I will have to hope that I discover some further information regarding this family and that this will help me sort this out.

The bride may have been deliberately misleading as to her origin. She was about 29 years old at the time of her marriage so should have known what she was saying.

Thanks again.

I had thought she might have meant Loch Laggan. Maybe the clerk was deaf and miss-heard her.

There's the parish of Laggan, which would certainly fit with MacPherson. There's the problem of a Gaelic speaker being mis-heard.
Try contacting the Clan MacPherson museum in Newtonmore for info',
