Kilkeel workhouse:Death of Thomas Norris 1894
« on: Monday 01 April 13 13:38 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Thomas Norris died in Kilkeel workhouse on 10th May 1894. Is there any way of finding out when he was admitted there? Are there any workhouse records available?
I have a copy of his death certificate which states he was 78yrs and a widower.

Thanks.
Francis A. Newell, Kilkeel,Co.Down.

Thanks for the workhouse link.

Now for the big ask; if anyone is visiting PRONI, could they look up the Guardian's record books to see if the information I want is there?

Rose,
There is a will for a Thomas Norris, carpenter of Aughnahoory, complete with image, who died on 10 May 1894 in PRONI. See http://applications.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_WillsCalendar/WillsSearch.aspx

Thanks for the info about the will, which I have just read. How sad as he wrote it only 2 days before he died. I knew he had children and wondered why he had needed to go into a workhouse.
Seems his daughter was married, and the other 2 were abroad.

Workhouses were often used as hospitals for those who were old and ill. so he may have been in the workhouse purely due to illness

It seems we share this ancestor. Thomas Norris is my Gr. Gr. Grandfather. My Grandfather was William Bingham son of William & Mary Bingham, nee Norris. Mary is the daughter named in Thomas's Will.
I like to believe, although have no proof, that Thomas died in hospital (workhouse). He certainly had plenty of relatives.
I do have family information & a Norris "cousin" contact. Send me a personal mail, if you wish.
