Etiquette.....? Can I have your thoughts please...?

Hi all.  I'm a new poster to Roots Chat, and very new to researching my family history.

I've only posted one previous question, and got loads of brilliant answers.

I just wanted to ask you all what you think of new users (me) asking for links to the websites that have been used to give me answers to my questions...

I don't want to offend anybody by asking, as I can imagine that some people may have accounts on certain websites that I wouldn't have access to, but would you think that it's not the 'done thing' to ask for this?  As I said, I'm new to all this and want to get off on the right foot and not offend anybody.

I appreciate that some people have spent a lot of time and effort in gaining the knowledge that they have and may not want to just post links for me (and I don't mean that in a nasty way)...

I'm really keen to learn, and want to know the best websites to use.  I don't mind doing the digging myself, but I struggle at the moment, not knowing which websites to use...

I'd just like to add that I'm very grateful for all the information I've been given so far and would appreciate your comments...

Hi Jayne....and Welcome.

By all means, ask where people get the information they post. I have never known anyone to be offended or disgruntled in any way by someone asking this. It is important that you ask so you know where to look next time you have a similar query, and of course you often need to know the source to properly document your tree (my advise is to start citing your sources straight away - don't put that off until later thinking you'll remember).

Welcome to Rootschat

You are right to ask for sources of information,  we all when answering questions should at least say where that information came from.
I think we sometimes get carried away in the heat of the chase and forget perhaps to post links or source.

Hello and welcome from me

If you have a look at the top of the Beginners Board here there are some threads marked in pink with lots of useful beginners information.

This one about useful links has a lot of the main free sources people use. Well worth having a look around.

There are lots of other sources of course that Rootschatters use - some available online and some that they have privately.  You'll soon start picking things up and gather together your own favourites.

That should help you.  We are all willing to help but it is not allowed to ask directly for help from commercial sources.   However, many of us have other resources at home and can provide much information.
Keep asking and I am sure you will get answers.

Hello There...And welcome

When I started my family tree, I was very lucky to come across Rootschat, in it's infancy...
I just could not get started with my grandmothers family (Hughes in Liverpool !! ) But with the help of this site, a very kind lady actually went and looked up who was living at a certain address where my mum was born in 1917, and bingo, I was off, and have never looked back....

We all love the searching, and will help wherever we can
