Samuel Franklin
« on: Wednesday 27 March 13 22:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

Was unsure of where to post this, as I have 2 people in my info , 1 being born in Derby, Derbyshire and the other born in Oxfordshire. I have already posted this in the Oxfordshire forum, so will just copy and paste this info to Derbyshire...
Seeking any further early info on my Samuel Franklin if possible, any help much appreciated ...

Seeking some help to further my research into my Franklin Family.
Reading over the years about Benjamin Franklin although American, his family originated from England.
So wondering if my Franklins are possibly from same line. I know its a long shot, but would still like to know  a little more on them if possible.
My earliest Franklin and moving forward on male line is ....

Samuel Franklin born Jan 3, 1745 in Derby, Derbyshire.

Samuel Franklin born 1784, Oxford, Oxfordshire. Died June 12,1860. Wife - Euphemia ( nee Davis ).

John Franklin born Aug 1, 1822 in Airds, Campbelltown, Sydney . Australia. Died - Aug 19, 1908.
Wife - Mary Ann ( nee Cooley ).

John Lunt Franklin born July 20, 1846 in Airds, Campbelltown, Australia.
Died : July 27, 1926.
Wife - Louisa Biffin.
2nd wife - Jane Biffin ( sister of Louisa ).

I have more info, but would rather find earlier records. I have nothing further on the 1st Samuel or who he married. I think there is a dispute on some sites that the 1st Samuels wife was Sarah ? Others say another name.
It would be a bonus if Ben comes from this family, I know there is definitely A Samuel or 2 in his family.
Help much appreciated.
Thank you,
Robyn

PS ..... Please note, I have duplicated this post in Oxfordshire only because I have 1 Samuel from there and the other from Derbyshire. Please note any info found on Samuel on this post is for Samuel of Derbyshire.
Any info is very much appreciated. Very sorry if anybody misunderstood.

Thank you ,

Robyn

Hi,

Re the Samuel of Derby.

The date of birth you give 3.1.1745 would appear to be incorrect:-

IGI  Samuel Franklin  Christeed 3rd January 1745 Weston on Trent, Derbyshire,
Father Samuel Franklin no mother stated.  However there are other children
Christened about the same time some to just a Samuel and others to a Samuel & Mary.

Is the above the Samuel you are seeking?

Marriage 25th November 1739 St. Michael's Derby.
Samuel Franklin = Mary Foster  Both of Weston on Trent

The first birth at Weston on Trent is February 1739,  which is probably why they married
in a rush away from their own Parish.

You can access all this information:-
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/igi

To search male christenings at Weston use batch number J013933 for female births K013933

Thank you for all that info, will most certainly look up the links.
Im not sure if they are the same person. I can only hopefully try and match it all up, guess work really. It seems harder from here on.
But this is a great start.

Thank you for this :-)

Hi,

You have a date of birth for Samuel Franklin, born Oxford abt 1784.

Where have you obtained this information?  because

UK Prison Hulk Registers (Ancestry) show 28th April 1809

Convicted 8th March 1809

Samuel Franklin  aged 20, so born abt 1789, just because he was convicted and the offence
took place in Oxford does not mean he was born there.

Have you read the following "Autobiography Benjamin Franklin"
http://www.gutenberg.org/files/20203/20203-h/20203-h.htm

Hi,
Thanks for the link to Benjamins life, will have a read.
As for where did I get the info of Samuels d.o.b. This is what I had been given by another researcher. My own research only went to John Franklin in Airds, after that , both Samuels details were given. So I dont really know where they got it from either.
Do you know for sure its the same Samuel , I really wouldnt know.
Thank you for the info you have given, much appreciated.

Hi,

That was going to be my next question - how do you know that the Samuel born Derby
is the Father of Samuel born Oxfordshire?

The best thing is to trace your own family backwards and see where it leads.  When given
information by others it is always best to check that it is correct.

People on this site will be pleased to assist, but you need to post info you have on your
own family e.g. any census details you have on them.

Hi Robyn,
I am a descendant of Samuel Franklin. I have been working on the Franklin family tree in Wikitree. Please look at Wikitree. It currently contains the lineage of the Franklin family in Australia and the UK (Derbyshire and Norfolk).
