MUTTON/THOMAS - from Cornwall
« on: Tuesday 07 June 05 12:00 BST (UK) »
Hi,

We have a Joseph Mutton died in Australia in 1906.  His wife was Julia Hannah Thomas who died in Australia in 1921.  They had a daughter Caroline Jane Mutton born in Australia in 1877.

We have been told that Joseph and Julia were born in Cornwall.

Can anyone help with suggestions or lookups please to help us find these people and their families.  Thanks

Sue and Jenny in Australia

Hi both!

Any idea when they arrived in Oz (other than before 1877)?  How old were they at death?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi, thanks for taking the time to respond, we appreciate it,  not sure about anything but what we posted.  Their death's came from family documents.  I am going to try and access South Australian Records on Friday to see if the death records have an age or parents.  In the interim we have found 'two possibles' coming into Australia as unassisted immigrants to Victoria.  A Joseph Mutton, an adult, came in on the St Osyth in Jan 1876 as an adult, putting his dob c 1855.  Also a Julia Thomas came in as a 8 year old in Apr 1863 on the Winefred, with her parents and siblings.  This also puts her dob c 1855.  My computer has its good and bad days (and so do I with the stupid thing) and I am trying to get the 1861 census to work to check on Julia Thomas & family in this census.  We were told by elderly relatives that they came from Cornwall.

Why do the ancestors have to make tracking them so difficult, it is like they knew it would happen someday and took pleasure (at least some of them did) in making the task very difficult in deed by lying, changing names, not registering births, and moving all over the place.  However, therein lies the challenge, doesn't it.

Have a good day

Sue and Jenny

If you post the details of anyone you want looked up - siblings and parents and all if you have them - I'm sure someone will have a go.  there are lots of us with censuses 1861 onward and maybe others will help with bmd or earlier censuses.

It may be worthwhile posting in the emigrants board as there are folk who have experience of tracing their rellies leaving the UK for Australia.

Do you want Joseph traced?  Or would it be better to wait til after Friday?

I am researching this family.   I am looking for Julia Hannah Mutton (nee Thomas)   She married Joseph Mutton in Cornwall, not Thomas Mutton.   I am sure we are after the same family.  Regards Fleurieu

Caroline Jane and her sister Hannah Elizabeth were both born in Camborne.   They came to S.A. with their father, Joseph.   Mum, Julia, can't be found.   Joseph married Mary Jane Symons in S.A. and had 3 children, one of which was my grandfather.

Hi Precious,
Joseph Mutton was my GGrandfather.   Don't know what happened to his first wife, Julia Hanna (nee Thomas) whom he maried in Camborne.   Joseph brought his two daughters to S.Aust (Moonta). Both girls, Caroline Jane and Elizabeth Hannah, were born in Cornwall.   Jospeh married Mary Jane Symons, also from Camborne in Moonta.   They had three children, one of which was my grandfather, Joseph Eddy Mutton.   I have a lot of details on the families of the girls.   What connection are you?   Regards Fleurieu.
