shubotham- 1770-1800 Norton/Audley area
« on: Monday 25 March 13 19:32 GMT (UK) »
I am really struggling with this particular piece of my jigsaw and would welcome any help please!

Daniel Shubotham married Hannah Baddeley in 1798 at St Margaret Wolstanton and I understand that by 1800 they had 2 children- can anyone find a baptism for these please?

My other problem is confirming Daniel's father- I have 2 possible baptisms for Daniel
- 5th march 1772 Burslem- parents Daniel Shubotham and Mary
- 21 jan 1770 Audley- parents Roger Shubotham and Mary

I do know that by the time daniel married Hannah in 1798, his own father had died- but again i can find no trace of a burial for either Roger Shubotham or daniel Shubotham.

I know that the Shubothams were linked directly with the Bourne family of Norton and one factor is intriguing me:
I have found a marriage of a Sarah Bourne to John hassell on 29th aug 1731- and when Daniel married Hannah in 1798, one of the witnesses was a John Hassell- possibly there as Daniel's own father (either Roger or Daniel!) had died by 1798.

If anyone can help me unpick this problem or throw any info at me that may just help- the smallest clue can sometimes be significant- i would really appreciate the help!

One other factor- i do know that Daniel's father was quite a wealthy man who left Daniel quite a lot of land and money when he passed away - which daniel sadly squandered very quickly by the time he married.

In hopeful anticipation!

Caroline:)

Hi,
I can't really help you with any of the above, but 2 farther back ancestors are probably yours.
5th June, 1711, Thomas SHOEBOTHAM buried
12th April 1719, Hannah SHOEBOTHAM buried

Hi queenswood 1, I know this is an old post, I'm new on here. There was a lot of Shubotham's in the Staffordshire area around the 1800's. I am looking into them myself and have found some fascinating stories about them. I have not yet been able to link Daniel to the ones that I have though. I have joined a History society based in Audley, so will try and look into those you have mentioned.

Hello
Let's start with the details of that marriage.
Wolstanton 2.12.1798 Daniel Shufflebottom of this parish collier and Hannah Baddeley of this parish spinster by banns .
Daniel signs Shubotham ,Hannah is an x and witness Thos Robinson and John Hassall.
the latter seems to be the clerk.

Looks like Hannah was baptised at Wolstanton 19.12.1779    d of John and Sisley Baddeley#

That 1770 baptism at Audley if you look at the original is Roger and Mary  Shufflebotham and Roger leaves a Will in 1828 naming amongst others his son Daniel Shufflbotham.
So I'd be looking for Daniel and Mary and widening the search to include Shufflebotham.
