I am tying to find information on Wallis Yard. My gr Gran, Eliza Baxter, was born at number 16 in Jan 1869. From my searches she lived here when she got married in1863, though I can find no record of where she lived before this date. It appears that her parents John and Mary Algar and sister Elizabeth Smith were living at this address in 1871 along with several different families.Was it common for several families all to live in the same house?

Yes, it was common for several families to live at the same address in crowded residential areas. Houses were very often informally divided up into tenements of a room or two, or a storey, and let on that basis to several families or individuals simultaneously.

Where in "London & Middlesex" was this Wallis Yard?  Even if you don't know precisely, a registration district would help a lot. I'm also a little confused as to whether Eliza's name at birth was Baxter, Algar or Smith. Was Baxter her married name?

I am not easily finding the John & Mary Algar/Elizabeth Smith household you refer to in 1871.

Sorry, another thing I am confused about is the chronology.  Eliza can't have been (both) born in 1869 and married in 1863

Wallis Yard was in Pimlico, Hanover Square.
Sorry about the confusion. Eliza was born Baxter in 1869, her parents were Henry Baxter and Sophia Algar who were married in 1863. Elizabeth was Sophia's older sister. Sophia's parents were born I think in Norfolk and moved to the area sometime after 1844. I have found it hard to find any information on Sophia from her birth in 1844 in Reepham Norfolk until her marriage to Henry. I found her parents on the 1871 census by searching for the address rather then the name, but can not find them on any other census. From Sophia's marriage record I believe her father (John) was a groom/ coachman.

I've finally found the Algar household in 1871 - the address is Wallis/Wallis's Place rather than Wallis Yard: RG10/105/67/43.

Churton Place still exists not too far away but a bit to the south-east, and can be found on Google maps.
