Can anyone read this occupation???
« on: Tuesday 07 June 05 10:23 BST (UK) »
From the 1871 census for a Walter L Gallant, b. 1869, Brockley, Suffolk.

I can't upload the picture for some reason. If anyone does have access to Ancestry would they be able to cast new eyes on this? I think it may be something to do with horses. He's living with his two brothers at the time, one of which is a horsekeeper, the other a harness cleaner.

Many thanks

Mads

It looks like 'Coalman' or 'Carman' to me. In 1891 he was a drapers assistant in London.

It's ok Mad, I know the feeling, I found the family and Walter from 1871 up to 1901 but I'm afraid that I can only guess at the occupation! Sorry.

You must have meant the 1891 Census for St Paul Clerkenwell.

Walter L Gallant age 32 born Brockley Suffolk

I think the occupation is Cabman. Drove a horse drawn hansom cab.
