Irish Orphan Girls in Australia from Monaghan: Place of origin question-complete

My partner has found details of her four time great grandmother via the Irish Famine Memorial website which lists details of the around 4000 Irish teenage (mainly) orphans who arrived in Australia between 1848 and 1850. She was apparently from somewhere called ‘Durneyglass’  in county Monaghan.

Details as follows:
•   Surname : Duffy
•   First Name : Ellen
•   Age on arrival : 15
•   Native Place : Durneyglass, Monaghan
•   Parents : Owen & Jane (father in Durneyglass)
•   Religion : Roman Catholic
•   Ship name : John Knox (Sydney Apr 1850)
•   Other : shipping: nursemaid, cannot read or write, relations in colony: cousins, Margaret Hanratty and Catherine Duffy

We cannot find a location with the name ‘Durneyglass’ in Monghan.

Would anyone know if this is a village or perhaps some estate or house?

Or, any idea on what the village could be if mispronounced?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I cant find any such place

There's no townland of that name in Monaghan listed on the seanruad site. Nearest I can suggest is Derrynaglah (parish of Magheracloone) which could sound like Durneyglass to someone unfamiliar with local names.

There is a Mary Hanratty on the same ship as Ellen. Wonder if that is her cousin that Paul noted on post #1?

I wonder if Durneglass was misspelt and it should have been Clunass
I get confused in my own country so i have no idea with Ireland and it shows

Thanks Elwyn- I think it would have to be Derrynaglah- the name sounds too similar.

Thanks Giblet- saw that record too- as Duffy seems to be very common in Monaghan, there may be a connection between the two.

'Clunass, Fermanagh'? NEVER heard of it, I'm wondering if again it was misunderstood. There's Clones in Monaghan (Which would be pronounced similarly and to someone who wasn't familiar with how us Irish speak/spell, well Clunass would be a plausible take for Clones).

Interesting, I've asked my mum about 'Durneyglass' as well and she has never heard of it. She grew up in Monaghan and all of my family from her side were from there. Dúthamlacht (English translation is Doohamlat) is in Castleblayney Monaghan, it's the best that I can think of.

You could repost your question, again under County Monaghan, and this time under Duffy. As someone wrote earlier, Duffy is a popular name in Co. Monaghan, not to mention famous politically.
