Sir Roger Bannister
« on: Tuesday 07 June 05 02:56 BST (UK) »
OK, I don't know if this is the place to ask this so I will anyway.  I've traced my family back to at least 1820 in Warwickshire.  I'm trying to find the link between my family and Roger Bannister.  The information about this family connection is pretty reliable.  Does anyone have any info or know where I can find more information on Sir Roger Bannister?  I have found very little in the way of his family history on the internet and I live in the US.  Even his father's name would be helpful to me.  His family stayed in the north of England in Lancashire for 400 years. His immediate family moved to Bath during WWll. His father has 11 brothers and sisters and most worked in the cotton industry. Roger supposedly was my father's 3rd cousin so I'm guessing his father was my Great Grandfather's brother.  His name was Samuel Bannister. Any information on Sir Roger's family would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dennis K Bannister

I believe he is a trustee of St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, so I am sure that if you wrote to there with a letter to be passed on that they would do so. He would then have the option to decline to reply or alternatively it may be that somebody in the press office might have some basic information that you might find useful.

Hi there

In Roger's auto biography,he mentions living in Harrow (and a running track there is named after him)either before or during the war.

A pal of mine runs there- I'll ask him what he knows.

See also http://www.achievement.org/autodoc/page/ban0bio-1

Hope this helps- more later, when my pal replies.

All the best

Carol

It would be easy enough to use the pay per view site 1837 online to find his parents marriage.I would imagine it would be a few years before his birth in 1929 and his mothers maiden name was Duckworth.

He also lived in Whitmore Road, Harrow,Middlesex as a child.

Ahhhh just had a thought- maybe Harrow library would help with his dads name?

Perhaps they would look up the family in the phone book or electoral rolls of the early 30s  ;D

Suppose you could apply fo his birth cert-references in my previous posting, if all else fails.

All the best,

Carol

Okay Dennis,

I said I'd find out more and I have  ;D

Roger Gilbert Bannister born 23.3.1929
2nd child of Ralph and Alice

Father Ralph was one of 11 children and born in Colne,  Lancashire

The family moved to Bath(where Roger went to school) near the start of the war and returned to Harrow after it.

Would love to hear if this does indeed turn out to be 'your' family.

All the best

Carol
