71 Devois/Bevois/Jevois St Southampton
« on: Saturday 23 March 13 00:20 GMT (UK) »
Hello
Could anyone from Southampton tell me if there is such a street as any of the above please? There is a Bevois Gardens which, on Google maps, looks like a street now ? gentrified to "gardens".

Going from 1881 census for parish of St Mary - top of page is Alice Toms, dau, 26, shopkeeper (general) bn Dorset Weymouth if anyone is keen to look it up.

Thanks so much
Meegan

I think it is Bevois St but it's an odd way to write a B.

Looking at the census, a page earlier is Longcroft St - you could try looking for that, or any other roads around Bevios St.

Your assumption may be right that the name changed to Bevios Gardens - it might help if you check google maps streetview to see what era the houses are. The area may have been subdivided and a new street named after an earlier one. Something might show up on old-maps.co.uk.

Just assumption on my part, but maybe worth investigating.

There is a Bevois Mount and Bevois Town and Bevois Valley .... in the area around Bevios Gardens, so you would expect Bevois St to have been in the area. It was probably one of the more major roads which has been renamed.

Even looking at an 1897 map there are lots of 'Bevois' in the area, though I haven't spotted a Bevois St yet.

Hello,
It is definitely Bevois Street and the head of household on previous page is HOOPER, Harriett Head Widow F 54 1827 No Occ Weymouth, Dorset
That whole Bevois Ward and the Northam area has undergone several bouts of slum clearance and re-hashing during the 20th and 21st centuries, particularly in the last few years.
Bevois Street no longer exists as such. It was situated parallel between James Street and Ascupart Street, off St Marys Street,  before the most recent rebuilding of the area.
On a modern map, it WAS east of the recently built St Marys football stadium. Ascupart and James Street are in the SO14 postcode area if that helps you find them.
In the 19th century Bevois Street ran from St Marys Street right across and up to the railway line.

If you are interested in the history of the name re; the legend, go to http://www.southernlife.org.uk/bevois.htm

Yours
Vicwinann

Well that has satisfied my curiosity Vicwinann. I was looking in completely the wrong area.

If you enter Ascupart St into old-maps.co.uk and select the 1881 map, you can clearly see Bevios St where Vicwinnan said it was.

On a modern map it is a continuation of "S Front" past where St Mary's surgery is, east through to  Albion Towers - you can see where it used to be.

Thanks both to Ruskie and vicwinann for your information - never come away from Rootschat without being much better informed than when I started.

It is a funny way to write a B but all the explanations show me where it was.

Thanks so much
