Hallidays from Whitstable who flitted to Oz

 I have Stephen George Halliday married Alice Orpin..in 1908 ...can't find them in 1911 in 1912 Stephen went to Australia, i presume for work as in 1913 Alice followed with their four children all under 4 years of age ( poor woman)
One of thier children, Lydia Lillian Eileen,( born1910) married Edward John Humphreys (born 1897) in 1925, he arrived from Wales in 1922. They had a daughter called Alice Catherine married Ivan William Roser
Ive been told Lydia died in 2001 ( thanks to RC members)
A couple of questions....
 What age is it legal to marry in OZ because if they married in 1925, Lydia was only 15 ?or maybe just 16 or they said she was older

What info is available on Oz marriage certs and as im in the UK how much are they ?

Hoping really that i can connected with someone related to the theses names, i had given up hope of finding my Great Uncle Edward as all i knew was he emigrated to Australia.. would like the family of Lydia to know about his family back in Wales.

Each state and territory holds seperate records,so their point of arrival will help to narrow things down.Good news is that most certificates are very informative.

In the early 1940's my late father in law and his first wife married really young. His wife was 15 and 7 months pregnant and a parent had to give permission for her to marry.

As Lydia married in New South Wales im assuming at this stage it is the NSW certificates that are a interest to you?

There are transcript agents who are cheaper than purchasing the actual certificate but as i dont know much about them someone else might be able to fill you in on how the agents work.

Hi there,

Depending on the era depends on the minimum age, however unless the person was already an adult, they needed consent to marry.   Until 1970s, you needed to be 21 years of age before you had the legal power to consent to your own marriage.  This was reduced to 18 years in around 1974.

1936, 1937, 1943 both at 5 Albert St, Mayfield.  His occ: crane driver.

1954, 1963, 1980 both at 23 Milson St, Charlestown

1980  is the extent of my access to these rolls.  You can find the houses if you use Googlemap.  Mayfield and Charlestown are suburbs of Newcastle which had extensive coalmining and steel works - which may fit neatly especially if Edward was from South Wales.  Many mine and steel workers came form South Wales to that area. You will find a number of towns in the Hunter Valley out of Newcastle with names of Welsh origin.  There's Swansea and Cardiff for a start, although people here pronounce Swansea as though it were Swan and sea put together rather than the UK pronunciation with the s sounding almost like a z.

Thank you also Judith for the info.

I can relate to the Steel works side of things, as my grandfather , his brother worked in the Steel Works in Pontardawe, Swansea, South Wales, so i presume he got his work in Oz from working with my grandfather back home.
I have googled mapped both addresses, and gives me an insight.. i also see theres a Roser living at the address too who is an Electrician... pity he hasnt got a website for me to email him.. hubby willl have a fit if i ring Australia ! Suppose i could write in the old fashioned way.

Think as well that Lydia must of been a child bride.. i was  too... i was twenty seven , but i tell people i was ha ha

Hi Jo - you know, you could probably buy a phone card which would give you a cheap phone call to Oz.

If you look in the white pages (phone listings) there are some current ROSER entries listed living in Carrington which is a suburb of Newcastle also.  Sometimes writing is best though as it gives the recipient time to 'digest' the information.

NSW, registered Newcastle #81856
1971 Ivan William ROSER, parents James William, Hilda Emma.

Electoral rolls:
1949 Ivan William ROSER, constable and Alice Catherine ROSER at 18 Denison St, Mayfield.
His parents are just along the street at 25 Denison St.

Odd - can't see him after that, although 1954-1963 Alice Catherine was with her parents at 23 Milson St Charlestown.  Perhaps they separated/divorced. (Unfortunately NSW BMD indexes do not show marriages later than 1962, nor births after 1912).
However there are ROSERs in Carrington in 1930.  L

Looking on TROVE there are many entries for ROSER, some quite early - 1857.
