Genealogical Indices - KinHelp
« on: Wednesday 20 March 13 08:08 GMT (UK) »
When I try to access this very interesting resource at www.kinhelp.co.uk my browser simply times out.

Does anybody else have this problem? Has Gordon Johnson's site been closed down?

Rgds, Justin

PS I'm interesting in any instances of the surname Walker in Selkirk.

Hi,

When I tried the link, my browser rerouted me to this link

I am using Google Chrome.

Hi,

Thanks for trying. I've tried both Firefox and IE, and both time out. I'll gibe Google Chrome a try at home over the weekend.

It will be a great shame if the site has shut down. It would be immensely useful to all of us tracing our Scottish ancestry.

I have often found that when you get directed to this site, it usually means that the website no longer exists.  It is always a shame to loose a genealogy site.  Us in South Africa have lost two valuable resources over the past year :-\

Hi

Kinhelp.co.uk is there.

Mr J doesn't seem to have added anything since 7/2012.
Let's hope he is enjoying his retirement.

I have been in touch with Gordon. He has been having some technical problems, but the web site will be up and running again soon.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Ray,

Thank you very much for looking into this for me. I'm relieved to know that Gordon will be back on line soon. I had read somewhere that Kinhelp was his retirement project since retiring in '96, and I had feared the worst.

Maybe I'll drop him a line via LinkedIn.

Justin

Hi, folks. Gordon Johnson here, of KinHelp Scottish Genealogical Services. My website is housed on a relative's server, which has been going downhill for a while. A new server has been bought, and is now installed, with some of the file transfers still ongoing, but the KinHelp website is back up.
I know I have been slow at adding new material, but life has been busy, even at the age of 70. I currently am involved with Aberdeen University's on-line course "Family History in Northern Scotland", for which I act as Tutor. We have just completed the first assignment, and the second assignment is due early in April, and with 40-plus students, I get plenty of queries to sort out.
I am also writing a novel, as well as the occasional article for family history society journals - latest was one for an Irish society, about deaths in Scotland. I have got another index in preparation, but it needs inputting to a database.... another task not yet done!

Hello Gordon,

I'm glad to hear that you are very much alive and kicking and leading a very busy life.

With the better internet connection at home I have been able to access your site, in particular, the Selkirk burgh court databases. Last year I obtained a copy from the NAS of the Poll Tax List for Selkirk town and parish from 1694ish. Following your inspirational lead with those burgh court books, I intend to transcribe the Poll Tax List. When I am finished, I would happily offer the transcription to you for inclusion on your website.

In personal terms,  the list is disappointing as there are no Walkers listed, so I am at a loss to know from whence my family came. My family first appears in the Selkirk marriage records of 1738.

All the best, Justin
