I did reply a while ago - but when I spell checked my loong reply the forum locked up, and it all got
lost in cyber space somewhere..so here we go again!

There are 4 poss children from Sydney and Grace BINKS - 1837 - Louisa (again 3 registrations - same
year though); George 1840; Elizabeth 1846 and Sarah.

Interestingly Sarah with her first marriage to Henry MORGAN (1874), had her father's occupation as "soldier", name as Sydney, and no name for her mother. Henry appears to have deserted her (she placed ads in the SMH in Feb 1881 stating her intention to remarry if he did not reappear).  She remarried Thomas TOBIN in Apr 1881, and her father's occupation is now "surgeon", his name is George Sydney PINKS, and her mother's name Frances ....... On her death certificate, her father's name is BINKS, occupation "soldier", and mother's name Grace (surname not stated).

Both her husbands were mariners. The only document that states place of birth as Paterson NSW is her death cert - all others say Cardiff Wales. Her age varies slightly too. She was married in C o E churches/Presbyterian.

There is a Cardiff in New South Wales, near Newcastle, about 100Kms north of Sydney.

Could it be possible that the information about Wales was simply a shortening of New South Wales?

Certainly kept me searching on the UK BDMs for a long time tho' - especially as I thought her father was George!

I am actually researching the TOBIN line - but got stuck in Nova Scotia - so thought hers would be easier - oh how so wrong lol

I hadn't see that one. However in light of what I found last night, doesn't surprise me.

A Sarah Binks, was in the Sydney Benevolent Asylum - looks like she had 2 children there - Mary Alice and George Andrew. This is confirmed in the NSW BDMs. The female baby did not live.

I was in at my Family History rooms today and they hold the NSW Baptism records on microfilm, I had a quick look for the baptism's for Sarah Binks and found 2 registrations.

Roman Catholic, Parish of St James, County of Cumberland.
No 594,
Christian name: Sarah
Parents: Sydney Binks & Grace Lee.
Abode: Castlereigh St.
Age: 18 months.
When baptised: 7th April 1850.


Parish of St Lawrence, Sydney, County of Cumberland.
No 2287
Child's Christian name: Sarah.
Parents Christian name: Sydney (dec'd) & Grace.
Parents surname: Binks
Baptised: 2nd Jamuary 1853
Born: 20th December 1849.
Abode: Castlereigh St.
Profession: Labourer.

Marriage
NSW Presbyterian Marriage Solenmized in the Parish of St Andrews Scots Church, County of Cumberland in the year 1836.

Presbyterian Church of Scotland.

Thr Reverend John McGarvie of Sydney. Minister of St Andrews Church do certify that
Sydney Binks, bach'r of Sydney, labourer and Grace Lee, spinster of Sydney were joined in wedlock by me on third day of October 1836 at Sydney after Banns in the presence of William Green  and Mary Shuttleworth.
