Patrick Mc Givern, wife Mary. County Down.
« on: Sunday 17 March 13 20:44 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the above peoples records.  I am lead to believe that Mary was Established Church (Church of Ireland) and they had a daughter named Rachel born cir 1870.

There's a Rachel McGivern married a John Doyle in 1894. This may be them in 1901, I wonder if the Boarder called 'Magertion' is really just a bad attempt at 'McGivern' (have a look at the actual form)?

Yes. the lady was my grand mum and I have not been able to get any information to her birth.  The name Magertion, to me, was a mistake.  Patrick may of had been Catholic.  He was recorded as being an ex soldier.  The census, I believe, should of read, Mary Mc Givern who was my great grand mum.  She passed in 1908.

This is what I wanted to ask.  Is it possible to search at the G.R.O. for a marriage with only the name of the male only and the first name of the wife?

There are ways to find a couple using a combination of indexes- what information do you have so far?

Assuming it is the marriage of Patrick McGivern and Mary ? that you are looking for I may have solved the mystery (or at least part of it).

It seems as though the records already located are-
1) Rachel's marriage in 1894 listing father as Patrick McGivern, ex-soldier
2) 1901 census with Rachel age 30 born Co.Down and her mother Mary listed as Magertion, age 60, born Co.Down, Church of Ireland, married.

Thinking the spelling of the surname was causing problems finding a marriage record, I searched for McGivern, McGovern, Magowan, McG*, etc. Not finding anything even close (anywhere in Ireland) I then decided to search for Rachel's birth (c1871 Co.Down with parents Patrick & Mary)- again nothing. So, removed Patrick's name from the search and...
Rachel Mcgiverin born 23 Sepr.1866 Co.Down- mother Mary Mcgiverin

If I'm correct, Rachel was illegitimate, born c few years before 1901 census age and made up a father's name and occupation when she got married. Since Mary's listed in 1901 as 'married' it could be that she kept up the story of Rachel's father and Rachel only gave the details as she was told them.

I think you have hit the nail on the head.  My great grandfather Patrick Doyle and Mary Mcgiveran possibly got together and were not married.  Secrets were very common in those days.  Thank you for the help reference Mary Mcgiverin and it gives closure to an unanswered question.
