This is probably a very basic question - but could anyone tell me what 'np' stands for before a Birth date?

What document is it on - perhaps it is 'not proven'

In what context? is it on a birth certificate, in a book, etc.?

Just a guess but could 'np' be 'not proven'?

Thanks both for your suggestion.  It's in a humourous book about strange names, which my husband is reading.  I thought it was probably 'not proven' but thought I'd try my friends on RootsChat!!   Thanks again - if anyone has another suggestion will be glad to receive it!

Have now read the intro to the book, and apparently 'np' means 'no place', as in birth town unknown!!  Thanks anyway...........
