Hi Angie
I guess you are still looking for that link between your Hevinghams and your T Picken from Blakenhall, sorry I am none the wiser.
My Thomas is the one detailed above in Coldham who was born in 1785 or so in Donington His second son also Thomas may have been a possibility but I'm 90% certain he was born in Bishopswood having been christened in Brewood 1809
From memory your guy may have fitted this age group but it is such a common name I can't say whether this is the right one or not
I know almost certainly that my Thomas jnr survived at least until 1842 when his brother Edwin (which is my line) was transported to Oz as Thomas is named as a sibling but unfortunately he is also the only sibling which I have been unable to positively track through registers census or bdms The Blakenhall connection leads me to think that the 2 Thomas' are not the same although one sibling (Henry) did settle in Tettenhall as well as other family members and in his later years Thomas senior (1785) also. Hope you get to the bottom of your Hevingham story perhaps the Tettenhall churchwardens accounts may give some clue about your "nurse children"
would love to hear when and if you find out
cheers Chris (titania)

Hello Chris,

I have just found that these Picken's are in the tree I am working on.  I have a Thomas baptised 21.07.1782 in Donnington son of Joseph Picken and Mary Nichols.  He was the brother of our Jemima Picken who was baptised 08.10.1778 also at Donnington.  Thomas was living with his son Henry in Staffordshire on the 1871 census and died there in 1873.  I think he married Mary Dean 23.12.1801 at Shifnal.

Joseph Picken his father married Mary Nichols at Wolverhampton 23.03.1772  Mary Nichols was baptised 04.01.1753 Albrighton by Wolverhampton.

Joseph Picken was baptised at Donnington 12.12.1747 son of Thomas Pickin and Jane Dudley.

Hope this helps I am still trying to find Thomas Picken who married Jane Dudley 13.07.1747 at Donnington.  Thought I had him but the Thomas Pickin 28.06.1724 at Donnington son of John Picking and Ruth Bishton but he died age 12 and was buried at Tonge   So if anyone can find me a Thomas Picken circa 1725 think his father is possibly a Joseph (named his first son Joseph) would be grateful.

  Eileen ???

Hi Eileen, it's great to see a reply to this topic after so long,

I've also been down the same path that you've laid out so well but (there's always a but) the Thomas I'm interested in, although supposedly born in Donington, was married a second time after his first wife died, who was possibly the Mary Dean you mention.
This second marriage to Martha Stubbs produced a statutory certificate which names his father as John Picken. Now that immediately throws up a couple of possibilities, either Joseph was not his father, the certificate is wrong or both. Like you I'd decided the only Thomas of the correct age was born to Joseph and Mary and I have all but discounted the John named on the certificate as a clerical error. There are a myriad of possibilities as regards my Thomas' parentage and I would be grateful if you have any other documentary evidence other than entries in the parish register that may point to his birthplace, I would also be interested in hearing what became of Jemima Picken if and when you have the time, great hearing from you,
regards Chris

Hello Chris

Sorry for the late response but I have been looking for Jemima Pickring/Dickring/Pickering only to find her name was Pickin/Picken/Picking so have only just started looking for them.

Jemima married in Stockport Cheshire to a soldier named Thomas Beard 03.06.1799 the LDS has her as Dickring.  They went on to have 13 children all baptised either at Donnington or Albrighton.

Jemima died after the 1841 census was taken and was living at Albrighton however it recorded  both her and her husband as  from the County but then on the 1851 census Thomas recorded he was from Longhope Gloucestershire,so didn't know then whether Jemima was from the county or not. it's been a nightmare. However there are no other Jemima's with a similar name spelling.  I have a copy of Stockport parish register and it is written as Pickring not Dickring.

With regards to her brother Thomas Picken he was baptised at Donnington 21.07.1782 and was recorded aged 88 on the census 1871 living with his son Henry who was born in Brewood in 1820 (I think his baptism was recorded at Penkridge).

Thomas is on the 1841 census at Brewood so he should have his wife and some family with him I would think.

There was another Thomas Picken born at Newport Shropshire 15.02.1776 father John and mother Jane.  Newport Shropshire is about 20 miles from Donnington.

Joseph and Mary parents of the Donnington Thomas and Jemima also had a Uriah Picken baptised at Donnington 06.03.1774 but he died 13.07.1774, there was also Lucy Picken 28.05.1775 and although I haven't managed to find a burial for Joseph a base born child to a Mary 20.05.1787.

Thomas and Jane Pickin had 7 children all baptised at Donnington but none were named John. Joseph was the eldest so I am now looking for a Thomas circa 1725 with a possible father of Joseph.

Hope this helps  :)

Eileen
