Smith is a gypsy family name?
Jennifer

Yes, I believe it is... but I'm still not sure if this is a wild goose chase or not...

Having said that, - I have searched in vain for a Birth for William John Johnson, (on FindMyPast) and can't find it. And I can't find either father or son on the 1911:-( (I have access to this and so I'm not requesting a look-up for 1911, - I'm just puzzled).

William J Johnson 18 b. abt 1873 son of Reuben Johnson and Sarah. Where born transcribed as Nottoway on Ancestry.  Perhaps this is him? RG12/1068/33 p 59

Nottoway isn't in the UK though is it? It's in Virginia, USA I think?

And William John Johnson appears to have spent his life in England. Certainly on the 1901 Census for England, (when he's 28yrs and married to Annie), he's in Tottenham, Edmonton.

I reckon its a mistranscription - looking closely at it looks like Holloway, not Nottoway.  Both his parents are born in London and his siblings are all born in Tottenham. I would think it was unlikely they all shipped out to the US and were back again within 2 years for the birth of the rest of the children. St Mary's is a parish in Holloway/Islington which concurs with the rest of the place of birth.

In addition, a sibling of this William J Johnson is a Harry Clitherow Johnson who was born in 1871, again transcribed as Nottoway, in the 1891 census detailed above.  There is a baptism record for a Harry C Johnson, 11 June 1871 at St John's Holloway, son of Reuben and Sarah.  So if it is the right family, then they are definitely in the Tottenham/Holloway area and not in the US at the right time.

Gosh, - well done Kat!

Ance**ry mistranscriptions, don't you just love them? I will add these to my Johnson file, - many thanks to all who looked.

Kat, - I have never been able to find my Wilson Grandfather, (William James Wilson, 1860-1937) prior to his Marriage in Swansea in June 1893. He's on the 1901 and 1911 Censuses for Wales, and on both of them he says he was born in Manchester, Lancs. - but I can't find him anywhere before then:-( I'm fairly convinced that a similar mistranscription has happened, but it's defeated me trying to find it:-(((
I've posted about him all over the place on here, but no luck:-(((((

Best Wishes, Romilly.

Do you know his parents names at all?  I will have a little look and see what I can find.  Think I can see him on the 1901/11 censuses in Swansea as you say, married to Margaret.

Having baptised Harry in Holloway on 11 June 1871, Reuben and Sarah seem to have moved to Stepney for a bit:

Baptism, St Dunstan & All Saints, Stepney

10 Nov 1872

William John JOHNSON, born 10 September 1872, son of Reuben (a cooper) and Sarah, of 4 Lea Place. [Likely birth reg: William John Johnson, Dec qtr 1872 Islington 1b 226]

They were then in Tottenham by the time they baptised Reuben James on 2 Aug 1874.
