Cork Examiner Archives - Kennefick
« on: Friday 08 March 13 02:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm looking for someone who might possibly check out the Cork Examiner Archives for me. I'm looking for an obituary notice for John Kennefick who, I think, died in 1896. He was born in 1858 (I believe in Clonakilty) and was married to Margaret (Riley) Kennefick. He had a daughter, Margaret Kennefick. Any help at all regarding this family would be very much appreciated.

The British newspaper archive have SOME of the Cork examiners from the period, but no mention of John Kennefick in their on line collection.

Hi Trigger Happy,

Oh, too bad, thank you for checking.

I just found one reference to it and thought it might be online, but I couldn't find how to access it. Here is the exact reference:

KENNEFICK, John; Carrigrohane COR IRL; Cork Examiner; 1896-2-29; dja

OK, now that is good news. A year or so ago I had a similar reference and contacted the Examiner archives office. they were kind enough to post me a copy of the obituarys for the day in question and hey presto, my man was there. Good news for me, but bad news for the guy who had died in 1898!

You can see the details of the death notice in Ireland old news

http://www.irelandoldnews.com/Cork/1896/FEB.html

If anyone wants to see some extracts from the Cork Examiner go into
www.irelandoldnews.com index.html   and lots of counties are listed - go into county and then
year.    If you are looking for death notices go into www.irelandoldnews.com/obits and search name, you get a short version of the death notice.

Funeral on Sunday at 11 o'c for Carrigaline .  Although he died at Carrigrohane  which is about
two miles to the West of the City he is buried at Carrigaline which is about
6 or 7 miles South East of Cork City.

Mary/Celtic Liberty... thank you so much! I'll have a look at that right now. What a wonderful resource! My knowledge of the area has a lot of room for learning, so I especially appreciate the help in  learning about Irish place names, as well as resources--and how to access them.

You are welcome.

As you have the date of death for John Kennefick it should be easy enough to track down his
burial , that is if the cemetery has kept good records.

Have you got the birth for their daughter Margaret.  There
are two records for a Margaret Kinefick parents John Kinefick & Margaret Reilly b 3 July 1869

https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Amargaret~%20%2Bsurname%3Akinefick~%20%2Bbirth_place%3Acork~

The only thing about these is that you said John was born in 1858 and would only be 11
when this Margaret was born.  It shows one record for Clonakilty and one for Cork although
dob is the same in both, possibly the same record.

Good luck with the search

Oh, I see... well that would be a problem.  :-[  I mistakenly gave the date of birth for John and Margaret's daughter, Margaret instead of her Mother's dob. I have no dob for Margaret Riley/Kennefick, but my aunts tell me her parents were Elaine De Courcey and (Unknown--Perhaps Cornelius) Riley from Cappa Bandon.

Margaret Kennefick b. 3 Jun 1869 in Bean Hill, Clonakilty, Cork, Ireland; m. Edward Harrington, b. July 1865 in Cappa Bandon, Cork, Ireland: This couple, Margaret Kennefick/Harrington and Edward Harrington were my great-grandparents. The 1900 US Census says that Edward emigrated when he was 15, and Margaret emigrated when she was 14. They lived in Salem, Massachusetts at the time of that census.

There is a baptismal certificate for Margaret that states for July 4, 1869: Magt. John Kennefick and Magt. Reilly -- Bean Hill; SS. Humphrey Crowley & Ellen Donovan -- P.N. (I don't know what the initials stand for.)

I hope I'm on the right track here. I would love to know more about my family and our history.
