Brewster family, possibly from Suffolk
« on: Tuesday 05 March 13 18:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi group

Im trying to find any information on James, and his father John, Brewster.

James Brewster was born in around 1806 in Wangford, England as stated in the 1851 and 1871 census.

James Brewster was married twice, first to Sussanah and then to Elizabeth How.

When James married Elizabeth it states that his father, John, was a Publican.

James Brewster had 6 children, some of which were born in Norfolk, England.

I am not from England so these places don't really mean much to me.

James moved to Chelsea, London, England where I believe he would of died.

any info on this family would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mapes :)

James moved to Chelsea, London, England where I believe he would of died.

This looks a good possibility for the death (from FreeBMD):

Death, Mar qtr 1875

James BREWSTER, aged 68

Chelsea 1a 242.

Obviously you'd need the certificate for confirmation.

Unfortunately, baptisms for Wangford for this period don't appear to be online.

All I can add is that there are 2 burials at Wangford:

John Brewster  bc.1768 bur.30/6/1828 (aged 60)

Susannah Brewster bc.1832, bur.22/9/1834 (aged 2)

Presumably this is James' father and, from her name, his daughter.

I note that James and family are living in Keppel St., Chelsea by 1841.

With no burial for his likely mother in Wangford I wondered if she was still alive and had moved to London with he and his family.

There is one other Brewster in Chelsea in 1841 who is living in the same road:

Mary Brewster  bc.1781     Ind. (lodger)        shown born Middlesex (however, James and family are also shown as born Middlesex and we know only the youngest - Arthur - was.) Ref. HO107 - 688 - 5 - 27 - 9. (lodging with a George and Mary Mitchell).

I wondered whether Mary Mitchell could be Mary Brewsters daughter and have found the following marriage which makes it look likely:

George Mitchels (?) married Mary Brewster 1/7/1833 Wangford.

Mary Brewster bc.1773 bur.28/1/1850 Chelsea St. Luke.

She looks a good bet for James' mother so something to bear in mind once you are able to locate his baptism and if mother is given as Mary.

WOW!  I'm in total shock with all the information everyone was able to give me.

As it turns out, using Ancestry.ca had the name Brewster spelled Brenster so that's why I couldn't find some details about the family.   I used the info that you guys provided me and I found them in the 1841 census living on Keppel street as was mentioned.

Im wondering where I would find the baptism of James Brewster to find his mothers name?  I live in Toronto and only have access via the internet, or possibly the library but Im not sure what they have on English records.

As I mentioned previously, Wangford baptisms for the relevant period are not available online.   The parish records are held at the Suffolk Record Office in Ipswich.   You could try emailing them to see if they could look this up for you.

I am researching the Norfolk Brewsters and just added another child for James & Susannah Brewster - there is James baptized 30.6.1835 in Norwich and Robert George baptized 10.4.1839  Heigham St.Bartholomew Norwich.
If this James Brewster's parents are John Brewster and Catherine Fuller of Forncett St.Peter I have their genealogy.
