Could they possibly have been in the workhouse in 1861?

They'd still be enumerated, even if in the workhouse - but admittedly, some of the enumeration can be vague. :)

Well...

I can find a Charlotte Mason aged 20 in the 1871 census, born Southwark and listed as 'Wife's Sister', but the wife is a Frances Carrington, born c1844 in Southwark, husband Richard.

I can't find a marriage of a Frances and a Richard Carrington.

Probably a blind alley.

Paul

OK just for the record this is desperate but the only Mason who is a Smith that I could find in 1861 in roughly the right area...

3 Orchard Row, Camberwell St Giles  Surrey

Joseph Mason abt 1825  Warwickshire, England Head
Martha Mason abt 1822  Warwickshire, England Wife
Mary J Mason abt 1852  Warwickshire, England Daughter
William J Mason abt 1850  Warwickshire, England Son

Joseph is a Smith
