South Africa
« on: Sunday 03 March 13 18:22 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me here? I am doing some research on behalf of a lady in South Australia. Her great Uncle Thomas Percy Tomlinson Born Barnsley abt 1880 was in 2nd Battalion, Yorkshire Light Regiment and was accidentl killed in 1902 at Klip River, South Africa.

Can anyone help me with further details? Things like; what the nature of the accident was, where is he buried and what were the regiment involved in at the time? It was during or just post the Boer War if my dates are correct, wasn't it?

Thank you Neil, I am not at home so I did not have the DOB or the date of the accident to hand, the part about the railway I did not know.

He died 19 January 1902 and the war ended on the last day of May the same year.

After the siege of Ladysmith was lifted on 28 February 1900 the Boer were driven out of Natal by mid-June, never to return. So he died not in contact with the enemy. The Klip River runs through Ladysmith and that is about the only crossing of note. It is also where the railway from Durban crosses the Klip. So my guess it would have happened near Ladysmith.

You could try - http://www.sahistory.org.za/contact - they may be able to put you in touch with local Natal newspaper archives for an entry, or tell you where he is buried. There was a fire in the local newspaper in Ladysmith but that may have been before he died.

You could also try - http://www.brabys.com/business/5921358/south-africa/kwazulu-natal/ladysmith/arts-culture/historical-sites/imtombi-camp-garden-of-remembrance

They may have a list of burials. The map on the right shows the railway crossing the river.

Can anyone explain the comment on his death certificate? I will post the parts that puzzle me. Any ideas? I may start a new thread to ask this from a wider audience.

I would say Volunteer Company, there were quite a few of those during the Boer War.  For more info go to www.angloboerwar.com they have a wealth of information on the various regiments and volunteer forces, even some muster rolls and a fairly comprehensive list of the men who fought in the war.

Good luck
