Pension Records 1960's
« on: Saturday 02 March 13 07:41 GMT (UK) »
This is probably an extremely long shot but, is there a way to get a copy of a  pension record of a person who died in 1972 aged about 84? She was never registered on BMD but I do know she used her baptism lines as proof of age. All her paperwork was destroyed after her death so at the moment it looks like the only record of her birth is held on the pension record. (She was born in Wexford but no idea which parish) ???

What is this persons name?  She would have been born during Civil Registration period :)

She was never on birth records. She always said she had never been registered ( quite a few of my family were never registered)

By the time she was born c1888 most birth would probably have been registered. Some of the usual reasons for 'missing' registrations are-

1) child registered without a name (indexed as male or female) or with a different Christian name to the one later known by
2) registered under a different surname (if illegitimate under mother's surname)
3) name mistranscribed in index
4) missing from index itself although birth was registered
5) born and registered in a different place from where family lived/family thought child was born

I guess the starting point for looking at parish records would be her place of residence in the 1901 census. You say she was "about 84" - Is this an estimate from her age stated in the censuses? If so is her age consistent across both the 1901 and 1911 census, i.e a 10 year difference?

Hi Shorts, I (and others) have been unable to find her on the 1901 census. Her birth was estimated from the 1911 census and also confirmed by family. After years of trying to find any record for her I am assuming that the only 'paper' evidence to lead me to her birth is the pension record. Thanks

Is it Margaret O'Neill that you are looking for?
I have John(Jack) Lyons(1887) and Margaret O'Neill(1888), they were married circa 1907. Lived in Rylands (near Bunclody (Newtownbarry)), Wexford in 1911, with their firstborn Ellen age 10months.
John Lyons parents may have been Matthew and Ellen (these are also the names of their first two children) (info on 1901 census)
As for Margaret O'Neill there is little or no information about her, where born? who were her parents? Living family tell me that they weren't ones for registering births?! (only baptism lines) so maybe its something their parents did too? But there should be a marriage for them somewhere, my problem is I don't know if they even married in Wexford, - Dublin and Gorey have been mentioned but not sure if it is related to Margaret so thats not much help!
the 1911 census does state that Margaret was born in County Wexford.

Here's the 1911 census entry-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Wexford/Newtownbarry/Ryland__Lower/681622
What I didn't notice mentioned in earlier thread is the fact that they are listed as tramps in a lodging house. This being the case it's possible the census details (on which you are basing your searches for them in 1901, marriage, etc.) may be inaccurate.

How did you find out Margaret's maiden name was O'Neill? children's birth certificates? family stories?

I see a marriage in 1909 for a John Lyons - Jan./Mar.1909 Gorey registration district volume 2 page 734 with a Margaret O'Brien on the same page- might be woth investigating further if you haven't done so already.
