If you don't have the original, any scan will only be as good as the copy that you have. It is possible to do something with it - as in Maureen's - but it is very small and looks like the section shown below when enlarged.
I'll have a go later but have to go out this afternoon.

Just to let you know that I'm working on it. It's got some really bad vertical lines (possibly from photocopy/scanning) on top of all the other problems. It could take quite a while as I'm trying to stay as close to the original as possible and not use nasty smoothing filters
There looks to be a small figure to the left of the donkeys face - or am I seeing things. I thought first of all that it was part of the reins/eye piece but, on closer inspection, I don't think so.

Thank you Brevitas,gosh you must have a really good eye i cannot see anything , i have doubts as to if anything can be done ,i do understand when you say how bad it is and appreciate you having a go at it ,good luck with it .

Here's a tiny snip/screen shot (66%) of where I am - with the saturation right down. I think it will be the weekend before I finish it!

My eyes are playing tricks on this one for the moment. Will see if I can get more out of it tomorrow. In the meantime, here are a couple - one with grain and one with a bit of sandstione texture!
