Can anyone help with this surname ????? Falguith
« on: Saturday 23 February 13 18:53 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone come across the name Falquith particularly in the Sunderland area in 1860s and possibly in Scotland prior to that?

I have a surname on a marriage certificate of James Falquith at the marriage of his daughter Anne dated May 1868. I've searched ancestry but not much luck with the name.

from the original marriage certificate it appears that her father was a shoemaker and at the time both her and her husband Charles Kent lived in Green Street, Bishopwearmouth.  We reckon she must have been born in 1841.

 Any help much appreciated.

I think Falquith is a mistranscription of the name as it does not appear again in England or Scotland

Also looking at the 1871 and 1881 census it looks likes Charles has died by 1871. However they have a child in 1870 getting his birth certificate could give a better reading of his mother’s maiden name

Births Mar 1870
Kent   Charles   S. Shields  10a   621

1881 Census
Annie Kent 39 widow born South Shields
Charles Kent 11 born South Shields later census say East Boldon
William Linkhorn 34 Lodger

Could you attach a copy of that part of the certificate showing her, and her fathers name ?

James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Possibly a variant or misreading of FALCUS(S), quite common in that area.

By entering the name Ann/Anne/Anna, South Shields and March quarter 1839 - December quarter 1842 births into FreeBMD, the following possibilities come up (assuming the census is correct about South Shields and the transcriptions are correct):

Anne Metcalf
Ann Douthwait
Ann Douthwaite
Ann Moffitt
Anna Toshach
Ann Tinmouth
Ann Longstaff

I did not try Annie.

There is a death in 1887 that could be her but it says she is 43 so that would suggest a later birth around 1844

There is something strange going on with the birth of young Charles.

On the GRO indexes, and actual pages it is recorded in South Shields registration district in 1870

The birth does not appear on the Sunderland registrars site but on the South Tyneside Council site there is a birth for a Charles Kent in 1869 in Westoe (which is in the South Shields RD)
