Keenan/McQuoid families
« on: Sunday 05 June 05 20:52 BST (UK) »
Hello:
I am researching my KEENAN and McQOUID families, whom I believe are from the Ards Penninsula in Co.Down.
My gr-gr-grandfather, John KEENAN, was baptized in Kircubbin, Co.Downi in 1835. His parents, Felix and Sarah Jane (McQuoid) KEENAN were born in IRL in 1814/1809. Felix moved the family to the Workington area of Cumberland, ENG about 1850.
The sponsers for John's baptism were Robert McShane and Lucinda Dorrian. Based upon my friend, Bill Seeley's research, these families were interelated and likely from the Ballyobegun area of Co. Down.
Any information on these families would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Chuck Keenan

I don't suppose you happen to have come across a marriage between Mary Gray of Groomsport & John McQuoid in the First Presbyterian Church Bangor in 1832 ?  I'm looking to try and confirm her parents as Hugh Gray and Margaret Knox...

Thanks

Doug

Hi Chuck, I went looking for Ballyobegan and found it was listed by the great Ros davies website http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/Mc/McQuMcS.htm#q as in the parish of Inishargy 21:62/66 a townland 3km S of Ballywalter town; 564 acres; click here to see its location on a townland map; means ' Hopkin's townland' ; in 1659 there were 13 Scots/English & 4 Catholic families here & the proprietor was James Wallace Esq.; coastguards house here in 1863 V17 p 125 & V7 p 85 OSM;SP; PNNI V2 p 87;GV.
on her website are eg
Thomas McQUOID . Inishargy of Gransha; died 5 Jun 1832 aged 84; husband of Elizabeth who d. 8 Feb 1860 aged 88; grandfather of Joseph Dugan jnr of Scrabo; buried Greyabbey graveyard  MIs , worth checking in detail all she has. If your McQuoid fimnd themselves in Comber area Co Down, then I have a little connection which sometime agao seem to lead me to kircubbin and your name is familar to me so it might have been you.
Finally I have indexed Bill Cardwell photos of tombstones

Hi again Jim:
I saw another response you answered that indicated the linenhall site had already researched the McQuoid's of Greyabbey. By this, do you mean the entire family line?
How do I contact them?
Best regards from Western NY

Hi Chuck,
Starting with that Linenhall library reference, I have lost much of what I have offered on the internet, and have lost track of indicating the LHL had already researched the McQuoid family tree of Greyabbey.  I doubt I would have said that anyway.
As the Blackwood Family history manuscript trees arrived into the LinenHall library, Belfast. I made a quick index in 1962 for myself to answer the members demand, and shared with library as they were prepared to type it for me. Circumstances stopped me checking my draft cards and they were destroyed in error. The entry I have is for McQUAID  20N. , which means to me that a tree exists within that volume 20, which has unnumbered pages, the letter N means I spotted either notes appended at the back of the volume or beside the tree, sufficiently large enough for me to think they were of special importance to merit a note.  Because I have lived in England since 1981, I cannot check it for you as it may be my spelling mistake, a typist error etc for McQuoid or whatever.

I suggest you ask LHL to check if it is McQuoid or McQuaid;  then ask them to give you photocopying estimates if  it is McQuoid with any connections to Greyabbey or Inishargy civil parishes, and they think your knowledge relevant, then you should be prepared to pay a fee for copying, post and packing, and perhaps some staff time and overheads. Linen Hall Library,17 Donegall Square North, Belfast BT15GB, Northern Ireland, Telephone: +44 (0)28 9032 1707,  Fax: +44 (0)28 9043 8586, Email: <irish.reference[at]linenhall.com>.replace the [AT] with the symbol please

My index has no Keenan.

However you might be a cousin several times removed as I hoped I replied early ie
from my uncles papers discovered 2004 and you may guess, indexed by me, held in private hands ie his grandson. These are all Comber and Newtownards McQuoids post 1850, except for this glimpse of my McQuoid connections as follows

Hi Jim:
Better late than never eh?
Thank you for your insight on this.
I will try to contact the Linenhall info you mentioned. Do you know a website link?
After many years, a collaborative group of Keenan researchers have found Keenan relatives (William, son of John Keenan;b. abt. 1812, IRL. William indicated in UK 1911 census he was originally from Grey Abbey, Down. He is the nephew of my ggg grandfather; Felix Keenan;b. 1814;IRL).
Best regards
Chuck
