Beckett St Cemetery Leeds William PAPE

Hi I am wondering if anybody can help with details of the location of a grave for

William PAPE who died 1889.

I have found on the 2nd Edition of NBI a burial in Beckett St Cemetery of a William Pape in 1889
however there are no details of the date of death/burial, or location of the grave, or if there is a headstone.

I think his death is recorded as William Cope Oct 1889 Doncaster W Riding.

Hi Cass,

William Pape is buried in a Communal grave along with 19 unrelated others. Consecrated grave no.10608 in Beckett Street Cemetery. It is unlikey there will be a headstone but I will have look for you.

Other than the year 1889 there is no actual date of death or burial date. It looks like you will have to obtain the Death Certificate to get the actual date of death.

A communal grave, is that similar to a paupers grave, where the family have little or no money to cover the costs involved and the local authorities arrange the burial.

I think the chances of a headstone or marker would be nil, however that would be great if you could have a look, when you have the time and the weather is OK.   I know I have a hide to ask, if you visit the Cemetery would it be possible to get a photo of the grave site/area. I don't have much luck with headstones, I think my Ancestors did not have two coins to rub together, however it is nice to see where they are buried.

Hi Cass,

Yes, like a Paupers grave.

Beckett Street Cemetery is opposite St James Hospital in Leeds and I take my father-in-law there for check-ups. Next time I take him I'll have a walk across the road and see if I can locate the site of the grave and take a photo for you.

Rain horizontal..?? I thought it was supposed to be summer down there !!

This William buried in Beckett St. died in infancy I think ...

Births Jun Q 1889 / PAPE, William / Leeds 9b 422
Deaths Jun Q 1889 / PAPE, William / Age 0 / Leeds 9b 284

I've checked the Beckett St. MI's and there is nothing recorded for Grave 10608 so more than likely no headstone.


The William COPE who died in Doncaster was 69 years old ...

Quite interesting?? We'll have to wait and see what Cass has to say on your findings. I hardly think if William Pape/Cope's family were short of money he would have been transported from Doncaster to Leeds for burial.

thanks for that info Paul, looks like it it back to the drawing board to find my missing William Pape.

I might have to purchase the Cope death cert, the probs with UK death certs is that, they only tell you that so and so died on this date, at this place, do details of parents, wife, children and place of burial, so sometimes it is hard to identify if you have the correct person.

Ian, thanks of the offer but I don't think a trip to the Cemetery will be necessary.

Yes it is summer down here, however the weather is up and down. Before Christmas we had the hottest day since records started, (the thermometer in my sisters back garden broke), last night the wind and rain was unbelievable.

Hi Cass, sorry to hear about the weather, hope it gets better!

I'm not sure why you think the William COPE who died in Doncaster is your William PAPE? Is it William PAPE you are looking for?
If you could tell us a bit more about him it would help us to find his death. Have you found him in the 1881 census (or any others) and are you sure he died in 1889?

I counted 15 William PAPE's living in the West Riding in 1881.

The William Pape I am trying to find married MY GGG Grandmother Ann Guest aged 60yrs on 9.9.1875 at the Register Office Barnsley. I have a purchased a copy of the Marriage Certificate, William, a Widower aged 55yrs was a labourer, his father Benjamin Pape was also a labourer.

In 1881 William, Ann, and some of William's children are living in Hoyland, Barnsley. By 1891 Ann  a widow is a lodger still in Barnsley, and in 1901 she is living in the Barnsley Union Workhouse, Ann aged 88 yrs died in the Workhouse on 29.6.1903, occupation widow of William Pape Pig Dealer and General Carter. Ann is buried with her son John Lane and daughter in law Martha Ann Lane in the Barnsley Cemetery, there is no headstone. During her lifetime Ann married a number of times.

I have found on Family Search a record of Baptism on 2.4.1820 William Pape son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Pape at Quadring, Lincoln, England.

To finish Ann's story I am trying to find William Pape's death, which I think occured sometime between the 1881 and 1891 census. There is a tree on Ancestry for William which indicates that Williams death is recorded as William Cope Date of Registration:Oct-Nov-Dec 1889 Age at Death:69
Registration district: Doncaster Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding

When I found the details on NBI I thought that it could be the William I am after, and if there was a headstone the details on it might confirm.
