Hi makfai,

Michael's Hill is just at ChristChurch heading down to Winetavern Street (wood quay area) if this is incorrect I'm sure somebody will let us know.  but it is definitely that area.

There were houses on Michael's Hill and Cooke St which were tenement houses used by firemen attached to Whithorse Yard.  the fire brigade formed in 1862.  there is a good book by a guy called Las Fallon call "Dublin Fire Brigade and the Irish Revolution" which you can buy online (not expensive) which is a good read and had some good pics of early firemen.

Hope this helps  :)

Meant to mention if you get the marriage cert for John Murphy it would probably give his father's occupation  :)

Thanks for that.  I finally found reference to Michael's Hill in an old Dublin register so I know it existed!  I can't find it marked on Google but I have found Winetavern Street.
I have also seen reference to St Michael's Hill as the address for Dublinia
http://www.dublinia.ie/location/  but again St Michael's Hill is not on Google.  I wonder if Michael's Hill became St Michael's Hill?

The marr cert gives occupation of both John and His father (Michael) as Tailor.

If you use the OSI Mapviewer, you won't find st. Michaels hill using search or just Michaels, but if you zoom in on the area around Christ Church you can see St. Michael's Hill on the modern and all the old maps just at the top of Winetavern st. Also St.Michaels Lane and the entire block to the left of the top of Winetavern appears to be called St.Michaels.

I asked a Dublin taxi driver the other day and he didn't know, I'll have to remember to tell him next time he's in the shop.

I have found Michael's Hill in the 1862 Dublin Street Directory http://www.libraryireland.com/Dublin-Street-Directory-1862/111.php

'Michael's-hill' went from High-street to Cook-street. Nos 4 to 11 were in the parish of St. Michael; remainder in parish of St. John. It came under Merchants'-quay W & City.

Based on this I wonder if Michael's Hill was what is now called St Michael's Close?  I checked the OS map as suggested and saw that on there the street west of and parallel to St Michael's Hill is listed simply as 'Michael' whereas in Google etc it is shown as St Michael's Close

Nice find, sounds correct.
So that would be St. Michaels Lane on the 25" historic map and just Michaels on the street map?
Someone posted the years of these maps here once but I just can't remember what they were.

Most of St.Michaels hill is taken up by the church but there are a few houses at the end of it on the 25" historic so worth keeping in mind.

Family Search,Irish Prison Registers shows Michael Gaines in Waterford Prison in 1880 for assault on Patrick Toole,Michael age 23 born 1857 in Michaels Hill ,residence 5 Cork St obviously a mistranscription of Cooke st, also shows a John Gains born 1843 in Michaels Hill in the Richmond Bridewell in 1883 living at New Row.

Yes that would be St Michael's Lane on the 25" historic map.  Do you know the date of that map?
